The flag of the Czech Republic is the same one that Czechoslovakia has been using since March 30, 1920.

Meaning and description

The coat of arms of Bohemia , which can also be found in the coat of arms of the Czech Republic , provided the colors red and white for the national flag of the Czech Republic. The blue triangle originally stood for the Slovak part of Czechoslovakia, but is also interpreted as the color for Moravia . The color of the flag is in the tradition of the Pan-Slavic colors .

history

After the creation of Czechoslovakia (ČSR) a flag had to be created for the new state. Initially, various forms of the traditional white and red Bohemian flag were used for the time being. In 1918 it was declared the flag of Czechoslovakia. The re-established Poland , however, carried almost the same flag . The only difference between the two flags was the aspect ratio of 5: 8 instead of 2: 3.

Two years later, on March 30, 1920, a blue isosceles triangle for Slovakia was added to the left edge of the flag . The blue comes from the Slovak flag . According to other sources, the blue color is taken from the coat of arms of Moravia .

The Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia continued to use the Czechoslovak national flag for a short time. From March 30, 1939, the symbol, which the National Socialists did not want, was replaced by a horizontal tricolor in white, red and blue. The Czechoslovak government in exile continued to use the state symbols until the re-establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1945.

After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the decision was made in the Czech Republic to keep the flag, although this violated Art. 3 Paragraph 2 of the Constitutional Law No. 542/1992 of Czechoslovakia on the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. Previously, on March 13, 1990, the white and red Bohemian flag (2: 3) was reintroduced for the Czech republic within the ČSFR.

Standard of the President

The President of the Republic wields its own flag as a national emblem . Like the flag, the official standard of the President goes back to a Czechoslovak model. It shows the large national coat of arms with the motto Pravda vítězí (Truth wins).
