The current flag design of Tuvalu was introduced when the country gained independence in 1978. A slightly different form was introduced in 1997.
description
As with other former and current British colonies, the Tuvalu national flag is based on the Union flag located in the upper left corner. Due to the light blue color, it is a variant of the Blue Ensign .
The stars represent the nine islands that make up Tuvalu; the arrangement is geographically correct when the flag is hung upright (Union Jack in the upper right corner).

history
The then Ellice Islands received their first own flag in the form of a Blue Ensign when the colony of Gilbert and Ellice Islands was split up in 1976 . This flag was used until Tuvalu gained independence on October 1st, 1978.
1995, the number of stars was first reduced to the flag to one, but the flag shortly thereafter by a completely new design with no Union Jack in Gösch replaced, but which also showed the islands as stars. Since this flag was never properly adopted by the population, a slightly modified version of the old one, again with nine stars, was introduced in 1997.
