Flatliners is a science fiction film by Niels Arden Oplev that was released in US cinemas on September 29, 2017 and in German cinemas a day later. It is a remake of the film Flatliners - Today is a Beautiful Day to Die from 1990 and, like this one, is based on a script by Peter Filardi , which was adapted for the new edition by Ben Ripley .

action

A group of medical students around the young Courtney Holmes want to solve the mystery of whether there is life after death. In order to experience near-death experiences, the prospective young doctors can be briefly put into a death-like state with the help of a defibrillator , in which their heart function shows a zero line ("flatline"). After a few minutes, the test subject is resuscitated by the other students. Besides Courtney, these are Marlo, Sophia and Jamie. In addition, the medical ace Ray is there, who refuses to have his own flatlining experience. After the resuscitation, all four test persons reported euphoria and indescribable feelings of happiness in the state of death. Changes can also be noticed in real life, so Courtney can suddenly play the piano perfectly again after 12 years and has mastered the lecture material like no other.

At the same time, however, the four are haunted by visions of previously experienced tragedies. Courtney had a car accident 9 years ago in which her little sister Tessa was killed - now she has flashbacks of Tessa. Marlo keeps seeing a man named Cyrus Gudgeon, whose death she caused in the hospital due to carelessness. Jamie pursues a former high school sweetheart whom he accidentally impregnated and then abandoned, and Sophia sees a girl from her former class whom she shared nude photos of in order to ruin her reputation.

The visions keep getting stronger until Courtney even gets knocked off the roof of her house by her vision of Tessa and dies. Marlo, Sophia, Jamie and Ray realize that there is no other way to end the visions than to get rid of the guilt of their past. So Sophia seeks out the girl from her class and apologizes for her actions, which she accepts. Jamie meets the girl he got pregnant and finds out that he now has a son. He promises to be there for them from now on and even plans to move especially for that. Only Marlo fails to admit her mistake to the dean for fear of ruining her career as a doctor. After experiencing cruel visions again, Marlo decides to kill herself with the defibrillator. The others manage to revive Marlo just in time. Marlo then reports to the dean about her incorrect treatment and the falsification of the autopsy report. Contrary to her fears, however, she will not be de-registered, but only placed on probation.

At the end of the film, the four of them spend the evening in a bar where they used to party with Courtney. A piano piece is played in the background, which Courtney had also played after her first flatlining experience.
