Career

Florian Sauer started grass skiing at the age of ten. He achieved his first national successes in the races of the German Cup, and in the 2006 season he was in the top five for the first time in the overall standings. In 2008 and 2009 he reached second place overall behind Benjamin Bennett and in 2010 he won the overall ranking of the German Cup with Bennett tied for points. Both achieved five wins and four second places in each of the ten races. Sauer has been taking part in FIS races since 2006 . At his first start in the giant slalom in Altenseelbach on May 27th, he immediately finished eighth, but for the rest of the season he was no longer in the top ten. At the Junior World Championships 2006 in Horní Lhota u Ostravy , his only result was 20th place in the Super-G, which he took at the same time as the Austrian Jakob Rest .

Since the 2007 season , Sauer has also competed in the World Cup . His first race was the giant slalom in Marbachegg on July 22nd, which he finished in 15th place. The next day he finished 18th in the Super-G. A third time he took 13th place in the slalom of Čenkovice World Cup points, which brought him to 33rd place overall. At the 2007 Junior World Championships in Welschnofen , Sauer made it into the top 10 twice. He finished fifth in the slalom and ninth in the Super-G. The following year he won the gold medal in the giant slalom and bronze in the super-G at the Junior World Championships in Rieden in 2008 . In the slalom he finished fifth, but in the super combined he was disqualified after a goal error. In the 2008 World Cup season , the German finished eleventh in the giant slalom and 14th in the Marbachegg slalom, tied with Italian Manuel De Zan, 18th overall. On July 4th, 2009 Sauer finished ninth in the slalom of Čenkovice for the first time among the top ten in a World Cup race. He scored further points with eleventh place in the Super-G in Marbachegg and in the overall standings for the 2009 season he finished 19th. At the Junior World Championship in 2009 he won the silver medal in the Super-G behind the Czech Jan Gardavský . He missed another medal in the slalom by just three hundredths of a second. He was eliminated in the giant slalom and the super combined. One month after the Junior World Championship, Sauer also took part in the 2009 World Championship in the general class. He finished ninth in slalom, twelfth in super combined and 15th in super G.

At the beginning of the 2010 season he achieved his second top 10 result in the World Cup with ninth place in the giant slalom in Čenkovice and a month later he finished seventh in the giant slalom in Dizin . At the 2010 Junior World Championships in Dizin, which was taking place at the same time, however, in contrast to previous years, he remained without a medal, with only two hundredths of a second separating him from third-placed Lukáš Kolouch in fourth place in the slalom . He was also fifth in the giant slalom and ninth in the super-G, but disqualified in the super combination. In the overall World Cup 2010, Florian Sauer finished 17th and was, as in the previous two years, the best of the German men's team. In the fourth World Cup race of the 2011 season , the slalom of Předklášteří on August 7, Sauer achieved his best ever World Cup result in fourth. In the overall World Cup he finished 14th in 2011, which is also his best result so far. However, he stayed at the 2011 World Cup in Goldingen without a result . He was eliminated in all four competitions, in which he was in the slalom as fourth after the first round was still close to the medal ranks. In the 2012 season , Sauer only took part in the two World Cup races in Předklášteří on an international level, in which, however, after two disqualifications, he remained without a result. In 2011 and 2012 he finished fourth overall in the German Cup.
