biography

From youth to the European Cup

Florian Seer grew up in the state capital Salzburg . There he attended the BRG Salzburg from 1987 to 1991 and graduated in 1994 "with good success" at the school sports model ("SSM") at the BORG Salzburg.

In 1990 he was accepted into the national team of the Salzburg Ski Association , in 1992 the all-round athlete won his first medals at Austrian youth championships; pole vault in summer and slalom in winter . It was only when he was accepted into the youth team of the ÖSV and called up as a competitive athlete for the armed forces that he finally decided to go skiing in 1994 . At the age of 19, he celebrated his first major success in 1995 in Voss, Norway, when he won the junior world champion title in slalom, which was rewarded with promotion to the ÖSV-B squad and his first European Cup appearances.

Successes in the World Cup

In 1998 Florian Seer established himself in the European Cup and achieved admission to the A-squad with fourth place in the overall ranking. In the following year he got his first World Cup points and slowly felt his way to the top of the world. At the military world championships in 1999 he won another world championship title with the team in giant slalom . More important for his career, however, was the sixth overall place in the Slalom European Cup in the 1999/2000 season, with which Salzburg , who started for the Elsbethen Ski Club , secured a fixed starting place in the Slalom World Cup for the following season. As a bonus, he won the bronze medal in the giant slalom at the Austrian championships at the end of the season.

In the World Cup winter 2000/01, Florian Seer seemed to make the international breakthrough to the top of the world. With top positions in Wengen (fourth behind Benjamin Raich , Rainer Schönfelder and Mario Matt ), fifth in Sestriere and ninth in Park City , he made it to 12th place in the world rankings and thus in the first starting group. In the winter of 2001/02, however, he was severely restricted by recurring back pain and coordination problems and was no longer able to match his previous year's results. Towards the end of the season, the doctors diagnosed a benign tumor in the lumbar region, which could be removed in a five-hour operation .

Comeback and end of career

After the surgical intervention and a lost World Cup season, which he needed for the advanced training, Florian Seer managed to return to the Austrian ski team in 2003. In the 2003/04 season, the Salzburg native , who is now based in the Upper Austrian town of Mondsee, only made two World Cup appearances in Chamonix and Kitzbühel . Both times he could not qualify for the second round. The ÖSV then withdrew from the squad, but the athlete, who was unable to finance a season at his own expense, saw no prospects for a further comeback and ended his career at the age of 27.

Career as a coach

After completing his active career, he completed his training as a state-certified ski trainer and worked from 2004 to 2006 as a fitness trainer for World Cup group 3 at the Austrian Ski Association. At the beginning of the current 2006/07 season he took over as coach of the World Cup group 4 of the ÖSV men. After several years of successful work as a trainer, he switched - mainly for family reasons - to a job in marketing for the company NORDICA. Florian Seer is currently the "International Product Manager" responsible for the NORDICA ski collection.
