Florian Waldeck

Florian Waldeck (born February 15, 1886 in Mannheim ; † September 28, 1960 there ) was a German lawyer and politician.

Life

Waldeck was born as the son of an authorized signatory. The Jewish family was one of the long-established ones in Mannheim. After attending the Grand Ducal Gymnasium , he studied law in Munich, Freiburg i. Br. And Heidelberg and obtained his doctorate in 1912. He served in the First World War in Belgium. In 1916 he converted to Protestantism and a year later married the Catholic Bertha Mackle (1890–1964). In 1919 he became a lawyer. From 1920 he became involved in the board of the Mannheimer Altertumsverein , whose chairmanship he took over in 1930, and was a co-author of the series "Alte Mannheimer Familien" (Old Mannheim Families).

As a member of the DVP , Waldeck became a city ​​councilor in Mannheim in 1925 and chairman of the parliamentary group the following year. In 1927 he moved to the Baden state parliament . There he was elected parliamentary group chairman and in 1929 second vice-president of the state parliament. In 1931/32 he was also chairman of the DVP local association in Mannheim.

In 1933 the National Socialists pushed him out of all offices. Deprived of his economic existence, Waldeck emigrated to Belgium in 1939, where he was arrested the following year and deported to France. Although he was released from prison in late 1940, he was only able to return to Belgium in 1941. There he was arrested again on short notice in 1942. From 1943 until the liberation of Belgium he lived underground.

After the end of the Second World War , Waldeck returned to Mannheim and took part in the reconstruction of the badly damaged city. In 1947, he succeeded Anton Lindeck as chairman of the Mannheim Bar Association. From 1948 to 1953 he was a member of the Mannheim municipal council for the CDU . In the area of ​​local politics, he was particularly involved in the cultural field. In 1949 he was re-elected chairman of the Mannheim Antiquities Association. A year later he took over the chairmanship of an interim director of the Mannheim National Theater for a few months . In addition, he was appointed administrator of the estate of Carl and Anna Reiss in 1952 .

In addition, Waldeck was active in the legal representative offices in the post-war period. From 1948 to 1960 he was President of the North Baden Bar Association and, in 1959/60, President of the Federal Bar Association . He was also vice president of the German Bar Association from 1954 to 1960 .

Honors

The city of Mannheim granted Waldeck honorary citizenship and the Schiller plaque in 1954 . The Mannheim Business School made him an honorary senator. In 1955 he was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit. After his death, the city of Mannheim named the meeting room of the municipal council in the armory after him. He was buried in the main cemetery in Mannheim . The city of Mannheim maintains his grave as an honor grave.
