The international airport "Queen Beatrix" ( IATA : AUA , ICAO : TNCA ; officially Papiamentu : Aeropuerto Internacional Reina Beatrix , Dutch Internationale luchthaven Koningin Beatrix , English Queen Beatrix International Airport ) is an international airport near Oranjestad on Aruba in the southern Caribbean . It was named after Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and, in addition to regional connections, is also connected to international destinations, especially in North and South America . KLM and TUI Airlines Nederland also fly to Oranjestad from Amsterdam , as Aruba is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands . From 1986 to 2000, the now insolvent Air Aruba was based here.
history
In 1933, five years after a seaplane first landed in Aruba, then Governor H. E. G. Wagemaker decided to build a land airfield. This happened in an area called Wayaca, named after a previous aloes plantation also known as Dakota. The first scheduled flight between Curaçao and Aruba took place on January 19, 1935 .
In 1937, the first passenger terminal and the air traffic control tower were put into operation. Until the end of 1972 the airfield was called Dakota Luchthaven . He was then called Prinses Beatrix Luchthaven Aruba until it was given its current name when she ascended the throne in 1980.
