The airfield Stralsund is a special airfield in the Vorpommern-Rügen . It has a grass runway 900 meters long and 40 meters wide and is approved for gliders , powered gliders , microlights and powered aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of up to 5.7 tons.
history
The airfield was opened in 1958 and was mainly used for gliding by the Society for Sport and Technology during the GDR era . In 1966 a hangar was built and in 1972 the clubhouse was built. At the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall , the Volkswerft Stralsund aviation club was founded, which took over all rights and obligations of GST in connection with the field. On October 3, 1990, the municipality of Stralsund took over the airfield and leased it to the aviation club, which still operates it today.
Incidents
- On 6 February 2010, returned helicopter type Hughes 269C back from a short flight and floated flat at a height of two to ten meters of space. According to the information provided by the pilot, at the end of the descent at a speed of 45 to 55 knots , there was a loss of power and the helicopter hit the ground with the left runner. When trying to regain control of the helicopter, it took off again, sat down again and came to rest on the right side. The 52-year-old pilot was seriously injured and his passenger was slightly injured. However, the investigation by the BFU did not reveal any indications of a causal technical malfunction. Rather, the BFU concluded that due to the chosen flight path, the low interception height from the descent and the closed snow cover, there was a "whiteout" phenomenon with unintentional ground contact of the helicopter and subsequent loss of control.
- On May 20, 2011, a student pilot and his instructor flew some traffic laps in an Evektor Eurostar EV97 . After the final landing had already been announced, the aircraft went on a counter approach at a height of around 150 meters from level flight to a steep orbit flight and hit the ground almost vertically at a high rate of descent . The 47-year-old student pilot and the 41-year-old flight instructor were fatally injured and the aircraft was destroyed.
