Episode overview

1. Thunderstorm flight

Spring in one of the three northern districts of the GDR. At the fictional Langenfeld agricultural airfield , flight operations are in full swing. In spite of this, the experienced pilot Meinecke will be recalled to head the operations at the Kynast base, where he will represent the relay leader there for the next few months. Meinecke is facing serious problems because his wife Brigitte now has to organize the construction of the new home on her own and has to fight with the shortage of building materials and demanding crafts. In addition, the deputy squadron leader in Kynast and responsible for the flight operations, Winfried Oppel, is disappointed that not he will be the new operations leader, but Meinecke. Out of frustration, Oppel lets the planes rise again after an exercise despite the severe weather warning . When Meinecke arrives at the airfield, the pilots can no longer be called back. After the thunderstorm , Wolfgang Meyer's plane is missing.

2. Transmission damage

Meyer has to step in as a substitute pilot for Meinecke at Langenfeld airfield. The exaggerated premonitions of the LPG chairman Brückner ( Joachim Zschocke ) are not fulfilled. Meyer does a good job and is soon fully operational, but the separation from his wife is troubling him. During an unannounced visit to his hometown, he finds his wife in a unique situation. In a rage, Meyer travels back to Langenfeld, where his thoughts do not let go, even in the air, and lead to flight errors that ultimately result in a flight ban . The LPG chairman Brückner puts the men under pressure to fly more than the permitted flight hours so that the work and the fulfillment of the plan of his LPG does not come to a standstill. His creativity in the procurement of jet fuel , which is difficult due to breakdowns on the tanker, ends up almost in disaster.

3. Capers

In Langenfeld, the two new flight students are pounded hard by the training commandant Oppel. The graduate Gabbel finds it easy to come to terms with Oppel and to meet his requirements. Even with the beautiful Rita from the office, Gabbel, good-looking and self-confident, has an easy job until Rita realizes that Langenfeld will only be a stepping stone for Gabbel to higher goals. The reserved and stubborn student pilot Zobel immediately offended Oppel with his clumsy manner. His chances of getting the ticket are slim. Suddenly, an angry beekeeper reports to the base. He accuses Gabbel of having exterminated his bee colonies by applying insecticides over the lake . Bad luck for Gabbel that he loudly discussed the plan with the host of the local inn, which the beekeeper had overheard. He now sees his chance to claim damages, even though his bees died as a result of an illness .

4. Nosedive

The annual air show in Kynast almost ends in a catastrophe. While the audience on the ground is enthusiastic about the daring feat of the so-called aviator ace Thomas Sander, he is actually fighting with the jammed towline of a glider pilot , which has brought his machine into a dangerous flight condition and lets it fall down at breathtaking speed. At the last second, he brings the plane back under control. The anxiety that has increased since then makes it impossible for Sander to get back into the cockpit . Sander tries to hide his psychological problems by signing a sick note. The wildest rumors about his condition were soon circulating in the village . Sander's wife asks relay leader Meinecke to persuade her husband to seek psychological care . Before Meinecke can act, his men are called to fight a forest fire . The children's home where Sander's wife works was completely enclosed by the sea of flames.

5. Flying high

Winfried Oppel, bachelor in his prime and deputy head of the flight squadron in Kynast, lets the village gossip in Langenfeld flourish. The quite attractive boss of a model agency has turned her head Oppel. Allegedly the lady is married to an old school friend (Peter Prager) Opole. Oppel lets himself be carried away several times to breakneck flying tricks or he invents new technical defects on the machine and unfavorable weather conditions every day in order to be together with his love as often and as quickly as possible. Increasingly, relay leader Meinecke can no longer ignore Oppel's capers, which was already intended for his post in Kynast. An already planned promotion of Opole must therefore be postponed.

6. An old story

The flight inspector Harald Förster, charming and good-looking, suddenly arrives in the sporty, chic EMW 327 at Langenfeld airfield. For a few weeks he is supposed to do his practical hours there. The news of the arrival of the famous heartbreaker rekindles an old argument in the marriage of the aircraft mechanic Herbert Holz ( Jörg Panknin ). Förster had turned the head of his current wife years ago. Already on the first evening, Holz provoked a fight with Förster because he mistakenly believed that his wife would like to rekindle the old relationship. Despite many warnings from his employees, relay leader Meinecke assigns the two opponents to the same machine. Shortly after take-off, the engine fails and Förster has difficulty making an emergency landing. The cause of the near- crash cannot be found even after thorough investigations. In the village there is a rumor that Holz tried to kill Förster out of jealousy . Even his wife distances herself from him. Despite all the gossip , Förster climbs into an aircraft that has been serviced by wood, but this time wood is in the machine and the engine fails again.

7. Test flight

Relay leader Meinecke can finally say goodbye to his desk in Kynast and return to Langenfeld as an emergency pilot. He arrives just in time for the inauguration ceremony of the new home, the construction of which his wife Brigitte alone organized while he was away. Meinecke finally wants to settle down and have more time for his family. A late guest doesn't bring good news. Meinecke will continue to be the boss in Kynast and he will be promised new and powerful aircraft. Now he finds himself in a conflict between work and family. Pilot Meyer is also faced with a difficult choice by his wife. He should give up flying in order to finally live with her again.
