Foxfire (alternate title: Foxfire - Girls Without Mercy and Foxfire - Hiding Place of Fear ) is an American drama film directed by Annette Haywood-Carter from 1996 . Elizabeth White's screenplay is based on a novel by Joyce Carol Oates .

action

The events are told from the perspective of the student Madeline Wirtz. Her classmate, Rita Faldes, refuses to dissect a frog during biology class. Legs shows up in class and saves the frog and Rita, who is to be detained for not dissecting. The teacher Mr. Buttinger has a reputation for molesting his students sexually. Legs and Rita consult with other students, of whom Madeline Wirtz and Violet Kahn stay with them. They defend Faldes from the teacher, whom they beat up. Goldie Goldman comes in and joins the other girls.

On the same evening, Wirtz met Margret Sadovsky ("Legs") better, who was thrown from her school because - as she says - she "thinks for herself". Sadovsky stayed at Wirtz's, then she moved into an abandoned house.

The group is suspended from class for three weeks the next day, allegations of sexual harassment are ignored, but the teacher is fired, which does not suit the male athlete students. The girls sneak into school to get Maddy's photos to send in the next day, Goldie smokes a joint of cannabis and accidentally sets a fire in the school. The following night, Sadovsky first tattooed himself, then the other 4 friends. Legs can prevent rape by the group of athletes seeking revenge. The girlfriends are prosecuted and Legs has to go to the reformatory. Only when the false statements are exposed is she released and returned to the abandoned house.

Sadovsky kidnaps the father of drug addict Goldie Goldman in order to extort funding for the rehab. The man is accidentally shot by Faldes. The girls take Goldie and her father to the hospital. Sadovsky continues. Wirtz's voiceover says she will remain friends with the three other girls from school, but has never seen "Legs" again.

Reviews

James Berardinelli described the film on ReelViews as a "clichéd melodrama". The best scenes are those in which the students talk to each other. The combination of “sensuality” and “hardness” makes the figure of Legs embodied by Angelina Jolie “seductive”. The portrayals of the five young actresses are "solid".

“Cantet decorates it finely, seems to be looking almost desperately for the best possible 1950s set and finally makes a costume film. The girls' game could easily have turned Cantet's artificially pepped up family album aesthetics into a differentiated society tableau. "
