François-Nicolas Fagel

Baron Francois Nicolaas Fagel (also François-Nicolas Fagel ; * 1645 in Nijmegen , † February 23, 1718 in Sluis ) was a Lieutenant Field Marshal of the Habsburg Netherlands . He was raised by Emperor Leopold I Baron of the Holy Roman Empire.

Life

François-Nicolas Fagel was the son of the mayor of Nijmegen Nicolas Fagel and his wife Elisabeth Robbe and the nephew of Gaspar Fagel .

He distinguished himself from Fleurus against the French in the Palatinate War of Succession in 1690 . He was in command of the defense of Mons in 1691 and of the siege of Namur in 1695 .

In the War of the Spanish Succession he led the command in October 1702 as lieutenant general in the storming of Liège and in 1703 in the siege of Bonn and fought at Ekeren on June 30, 1703 .

Fagel was assigned to the army in Portugal and alternated day after day with General Henri de Massue de Ruvigny, 1st Earl of Galway, in command during the campaign of 1705 . He took Valencia and Albuquerque , and carried out the siege of Badajoz .

Returning to Holland , he commanded the siege of Tournai in 1709 , and fought in the battles at Ramillies and Malplaquet . He besieged Béthune , achieved the surrender of the Bouchain fortress in 1711 , forced the crossing over the Scheldt in 1712 and conquered the fortress Le Quesnoy . He died as a general of the infantry in the service of the States General .
