François de Bourbon, Comte de Vendôme
François de Bourbon ( 1470 - October 30, 1495 in Vercelli ) was Count of Vendôme from 1478 until his death . He was the eldest son of Count Jean VIII. De Bourbon († 1478) and his wife Isabelle de Beauvau († 1474).
François came from a younger branch of the House of Bourbon , which in turn was of royal Capetian origin, being derived from Robert, the youngest son of King Louis IX. of the saint .
Life
Since François was not of age when his father died, his brother-in-law Louis de Joyeuse, Count of Grandpré , administered his territories, which in 1484 were expanded to include the baronies of Mondoubleau and Saint-Calais thanks to a royal donation . At the coronation of King Charles VIII of France , he represented the county of Toulouse and assisted him in 1488 in the trial of the Dukes of Brittany and Orléans (later King Louis XII ), who had revolted against the crown. In 1494, François took part in Charles' army campaign to Italy , the aim of which was to conquer the Kingdom of Naples . After taking Florence , Rome and Naples , he fought on July 6, 1495 in the Battle of Fornovo , after which the French army withdrew from Italy. On the way back he fell ill with dysentery and died in Vercelli. His body was transferred to Vendôme and buried in the Saint-Georges cathedral.
