Francesco Griselini (born August 12, 1717 in St. Fantino near Venice , † 1787 in Milan , Italy ) was an Italian scholar , scientist , traveler and Banat historian .

Family and studies

His father Marco was an Italian cloth maker , his mother Elisabetta , née Sperafigo , was the daughter of a silk merchant from Milan.

Francesco Griselini began studying theology in Venice , but broke it off to marry Libera Pompiglia . He then devoted himself to studying history and natural sciences. Griselini was a polymath . He worked as a geographer , cartographer , naturalist , writer , draftsman , comedy poet , traveler, journalist and botanist . He published the Dizionario delle arti e de 'mestieri , published in 18 volumes from 1768 to 1778 , an encyclopedia on agriculture, mining, handicrafts, trades and technology. From volume 6 he supported Abbot Marco Osvaldo Fassadoni (1732-1813).

Journey to the Banat

Around 1770 he met Josef Brigido von Bresowitz , president of the provincial administration of the Temescher Banat , and his brother Pompejus . At the invitation of the Brigido brothers, he went on a study trip to the Banat on September 21, 1774 . On September 22nd, he arrived in Timisoara , where he was housed in the Presidential Palace on Domplatz , now the Baroque Palace. He stayed here until March 1777.

During this time he toured the Banat on behalf of the Timisoara provincial government and recorded his impressions and experiences in a description of the Banat that is still important today. From here he wrote several letters to "notables and scholars" of the time, which were published in the magazines "Giornale d'Italia" and "Nuovo Giornale d'Italia".

In 1780 he brought the letters in Milan under the title “ Lettere odeporiche ove i suoi viaggi e le di lui osservazioni spettanti all'istoria naturale, ai costumi di vari popoli e sopra più altri interestingi oggeti si descrivono, giuntevi parecchie memorie dello stesso autore, cheuntevi parecchie memorie dello stesso autore riguardano le scienze e le arti utili ”.

Almost at the same time the German translation appeared in Vienna , which he dedicated to the Empress Maria Theresa under the title " Attempting a political and natural history of the Temeswar Banat in letters to notables and scholars ".

Griselini died mentally deranged in a Milan sanatorium in 1787.
