Francisco Suarez

Francisco Suárez (born January 5, 1548 in Granada , † September 25, 1617 in Lisbon ) was a Spanish Jesuit , theologian and philosopher . He was given the honorary name Doctor Eximius ("outstanding teacher").

Suárez joined the Jesuits in Salamanca on June 16, 1564 and studied theology in this city from 1565 to 1570.

He then taught philosophy in Ávila and Segovia in 1571, and then theology in 1575. In the course of his life he taught theology at various universities: 1576 in Valladolid , 1580 to 1585 in Rome , 1585 to 1592 in Alcalá , 1592 to 1597 in Salamanca and 1597 to 1616 in Coimbra .

In theology he wrote a large number of treatises, not all of which met with higher grace, for example his teaching on written confession was forbidden, and his book Defensio fidei was burned in Paris . In full accord with his superiors and the Pope, however , he found himself defending the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception and the Eternal Virginity of Mary. He made important contributions to the so-called Analysis fidei .

In philosophy he was a representative of natural law and is counted to the school of Salamanca . His metaphysical writings had a strong effect on Leibniz .

Because of his legal writings, he was later seen as a co-founder of international law .

Suarez had a tremendous impact. His metaphysical writings, especially the Disputationes Metaphysicae (1597) and his writings on natural law, were received well into the 18th century in both Catholic and Protestant Europe. He can therefore be described as one of the founders of Baroque scholasticism alongside Franciscus Toletus .
