Franco Cerri (born January 29, 1926 in Milan ) is an Italian jazz guitarist and television presenter . He was considered "the best Italian guitarist" and was even called the "best guitarist that European jazz has produced".

Live and act

Cerri, who began playing guitar as a teenager and initially explored jazz with the pianist Giampiero Boneschi, began his career in 1945 with Gorni Kramer as well as Bruno Martelli, Franco Mojoli, Carlo Zeme and the Cetra Quartet . In 1949 he accompanied Django Reinhardt . In the 1950s he played with Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan as well as Billie Holiday and Lee Konitz . He also formed his own quartet, which was anchored in modern jazz and in which Dado Moroni became known. In the 1960s he played regularly on the television shows Buone Vacanze and Jazz Primo Amore ; he also had his own programs at RAI such as Fine serata da Franco Cerri , where he accompanied Mina , among others . In total, he has hosted more than 600 television shows. Musicians such as Gianluigi Trovesi , Tullio De Piscopo , Pino Presti and Flavio Ambrosetti worked in his combos . In the 1970s he also played with Barney Kessel and Tony Scott . Since 1980 he has worked with the pianist Enrico Intra , with whom he also founded Musica Oggi as a society for the promotion of jazz, organized the jazz courses Civici Corsi di Jazz di Milano and recorded numerous albums.

In 1982 he and the classical guitarist Mario Gangi wrote a guitar course in 60 lessons for the Fabbri publishing house, which reached its fifth edition. Together with Paolo Cattaneo and Giovanni Monteforte he wrote the textbook Chitarra Jazz - sviluppi - approcci - esperienze (1993 with Ricordi).

In 2006 Carlo Azeglio Ciampi awarded him the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for his services to the music of Italy and appointed him Commendatore della Repubblica .
