Stefano Bagnoli

Stefano Bagnoli (born February 17, 1963 in Milan ) is an Italian jazz musician ( drums , composition); he is considered one of the best jazz drummers in Italy.

Live and act

Bagnoli comes from a family of musicians; his uncle Carlo and father Luigi Bagnoli founded the Milan College Jazz Society in 1951 (one of the first traditional jazz groups in Italy). He received lessons at an early age, initially from the drummers of the Milan Rai Orchestra. Then he studied at the conservatory in his hometown; Between 1982 and 1985 he was a member of Milan's G. Verdi Symphony Orchestra.

Bagnoli began his career as a drummer in the jazz field in 1978 and initially worked with musicians such as Carlo Bagnoli, Sante Palumbo, Paolo Tomelleri and Franco Cerri . Then belonged to the groups of Dado Moroni , Paolo Fresu , Dino Rubino, Franco Ambrosetti , Paolo Dalla Porta, Riccardo Fioravanti, Paolo Jannacci , Mattia Cigalini , Giuseppe Mirabella and Nello Toscano. With the saxophonist Max De Aloe, the pianist Renato Sellani and the bassist Massimo Moriconi, he formed a collaborative quartet that released the album Il Poeta in 2001 . In 2011 he founded his first "We Kids Trio", which he used over the years to promote young talent. In 2016, Bagnoli renewed the trio with pianist Giuseppe Vitale and drummer Stefano Zambon.

Three “Tribute” albums were created under his own name, one with the We Kid Trio to the musician Billy Strayhorn (2015), a second (2017) to the poet Arthur Rimbaud , which also contains recitations by Bagnoli, and another in 2019 with the We Kid Trio , to Salvador Dalí . The album Carpe Diem (Tǔk Music, 2018) by the Paolo Fresu Devil Quartet , of which the drummer is a member, also contains a 5-minute composition Ballata per Rimbaud by Bagnoli.

Bagnoli also worked with Benny Bailey , Randy Brecker , Chico Buarque , Emanuele Cisi , Harry Sweets Edison , Buddy DeFranco , Roberta Gambarini , George Garzone , Johnny Griffin , Gustl Mayer , Sarah Jane Morris , Romano Mussolini , Lino Patruno , Clark Terry , Miroslav Vitous , Cedar Walton or Bob Wilber . He can also be heard on albums by Gianni Basso , Enrico Rava , Andrea Pozza , Bruno Di Filippi / Gianni Coscia , Furio Di Castri , Michael Rosen , Michela Lombardi / Renato Sellani, Fritz Hartschuh , Danilo Rea and Massimo Ranieri .

Bagnoli, nicknamed Brushman because of his skillful use of the jazz broom , taught at two Italian conservatories. He wrote a textbook on the broom game ( Spazzole, ultima frontiera , 2005).
