Frank Hawkins (biologist)

Andrew Francis Alexander "Frank" Hawkins (born February 23, 1962 in Bristol ) is a British - Canadian conservation biologist , ornithologist and conservationist .

Life

Hawkins has both British and Canadian citizenship. In 1984 he received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Exeter . In 1987 he graduated with a Master of Science degree in Conservation Biology from University College London . In 1994 he was with the dissertation Forest degradation and the western Malagasy forest bird community for Ph.D. PhD from University College London. In 1986 he was the survey officer at the Asian Wetlands Bureau (now Wetlands International ) in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia . In 1987 he was a consulting ornithologist for the Cordama Foundation surveys in the Ankarana Special Reserve. In 1988 he worked on an expedition from the University of Cambridge to the Malagasy rainforest. In 1992 he was a member of a coastal bird study by the International Council for Bird Preservation (ICBP) in the Arabian Gulf as well as chief coordinator of the ICBP's Angola Scarp Project. Between 1992 and 1996 Hawkins took part in several expeditions and surveys for birds and lemurs in Madagascar.

From 1987 to 2007 he worked mainly in Madagascar, at Conservation International (CI) and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs), where he carried out research on birds, lemurs and Malagasy predators and supported the government, communities and local NGOs in the implementation of the national environmental action plan . He has written or co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles and 10 books, including Birds of Madagascar: A Photographic Guide (1998, with Peter Morris), Lemurs of Madagascar , 3rd Edition (2010, with Russell Mittermeier ), Lémuriens de Madagascar ( 2013, with Russell A. Mittermeier, Christian Roos , Anthony B. Rylands , Olivier Langrand , Peter M. Kappeler and Stephen D. In 2003 Hawkins wrote the family chapter on the lobed pittas in volume eight of the Handbook of the Birds of the World . In 2006 he was part of the family chapter on the warblers in volume 11.

From 2006 to 2012, Hawkins was Senior Vice President at Conservation International. In addition to the technical management of the CI department for Africa and Madagascar, he devoted himself to ecological economic policy and worked on aspects of land use planning, emphasizing the value of nature as the basis for sustainable development.

Since 2013 Hawkins, the director of the IUCN Offices in Washington, DC , which supports more than 130 members in the region and working with North American foundations, political offices and government institutions. Hawkins is focused on political work, particularly the use of natural resources in investment decisions, and on connecting the North American conservation community.

Hawkins is married to Joanna Durbin, director of the Climate Community & Biodiversity Alliance in Washington, DC. The couple have two daughters.
