Frankfurt city derby

The encounter between Eintracht Frankfurt and FSV Frankfurt is traditionally referred to as the Frankfurt city derby .

Sociological characteristics

While the clubs that merged to form Frankfurter Eintracht in 1920 all had bourgeois to elitist roots, most of the founders of FSV Frankfurt came from the petty bourgeoisie and therefore initially played an outsider role in the Frankfurt soccer society . Nevertheless - and perhaps because of its "uniqueness" - the FSV had the largest and most loyal fan base of all Frankfurt clubs in the years before the First World War . After the merger-related emergence of Eintracht in 1920, it was soon known as "the Frankfurt Association", whose supporters were spread all over the city. In contrast, the FSV was firmly anchored in "its district" Bornheim , the residents of which were mostly simple people, workers and employees.

The attraction of derby

About the original appeal of the Frankfurt city derbies says the publication commemorating the 100th anniversary of FSV Frankfurt mutatis mutandis ". True peoples emigration began when the Derby was against the existing since 1920 Eintracht on the program" Coincidentally this report to the football in his Issue of October 10, 1923: “The long series of encounters between Eintracht and football sports club occupies a very special place in the history of football in Frankfurt. These meetings have always offered the greatest attraction for the football-loving audience and mostly brought the record attendance of the year. The fights of these two leading clubs in the main area were always appealing because they were never won by more than one goal difference. "

The derby held in Frankfurt's Waldstadion on October 30, 1927, set a new record and was attended by 40,000 visitors. There had never been such an audience in Frankfurt before and it was apparently a new experience even for the whole of southern Germany. At least one can read in the November 1, 1927 issue of Fußball : “ Nuremberg - Fürth and Munich , these two major Bavarian centers, have been far outstripped by the Main metropolis with their highest attendance of 25,000 at club games. The meeting F.Sp.V. - Eintracht, held at the stadium on Sunday, attracted 40,000 people. This mass can withstand a comparison with English conditions. Frankfurt's record is no coincidence, but a natural consequence of the immense rivalry between the football club and Eintracht. Other cities have such local rivalries too, e.g. B. Klub - Fürth , Wacker - Bayern in Munich, Stuttgarter Kickers - VfB , VfR Mannheim - Waldhof , KFV - Phönix Karlsruhe , but Frankfurt a. M. has the more impulsive population and the more prudent, more energetic, more forward-striving club management. "

The radiance that was still inherent in the FSV at the time is also illustrated by the attendance figures for the football Oberliga Süd , which existed from 1945 to 1963 and belonged to the FSV from 1945 to 1962. In these 17 years, the FSV played its home games in front of an average of almost 10,000 spectators and thus had only about a fifth fewer spectators than Eintracht. In 4 seasons the FSV even had a better cut. But with the introduction of the Bundesliga in 1963 and the inclusion of Eintracht Frankfurt in the same, the audience numbers of the two Frankfurt clubs gradually diverged. While the average attendance of the FSV halved to 5,000 in the mid-1960s, it doubled to 25,000 at Eintracht. With the first descent of the FSV at the end of the 1967/68 season in the third division, the audience interest continued to decline. If the later champions and promoted FSV in the Hessenliga 1968/69 with an average attendance of almost 3,000 were still the absolute croesus of the league, his home games rarely saw more than 300 visitors in the 1980s.

While the Frankfurt derby more or less electrified the football-loving population in the Main metropolis until the 1950s, the clash between the two opponents in the 2nd Bundesliga 2011/12 lacked any derby atmosphere. In an article in the soccer magazine 11 Freunde about the first league derby in 50 years, which took place on August 21, 2011, it says: "Hardly any other event moved, fascinated and shook soccer Germany less than the Frankfurt city derby."

How much the importance of the derby had changed can be seen in a report by Kicker on December 28, 1926: “Two days before the game, Frankfurt was like a madhouse. It cannot be put into words ... there is not a scribbler pen that is pointedly persistent enough to describe the excitement that reigned in the circles involved about the upcoming game. ... The city of Frankfurt lost a lot of money because all the tram conductors talked to the passengers about the game and forgot to buy tickets . "

Records

The highest derby win in a competitive match was a 6-0 win for both teams in a league game. With this result, Eintracht defeated the FSV on December 25, 1931 and the FSV returned the favor on December 9, 1945.

Series

Eintracht has to show the longer positive series. So she remained unbeaten in the last 15 championship derbies (since the last FSV victory on October 9, 1955). Of these 15 games, 13 were won and 2 ended in a draw. The longest winning streak of Eintracht dates from this period with 8 victories in a row, which were achieved between the 3: 1 on September 30, 1956 and the 2: 1 on February 7, 1960.

The longest winning streak of the FSV included 3 wins in 1924 and 1925, which ended 3: 0, 4: 1 and 4: 2. The longest series without a defeat on the green turf of a total of 7 games between the 3-0 on October 5, 1924 and the 1: 1 on October 2, 1927 (balance: 5 wins and 2 draws), was from this period the 1: 1 from December 6, 1925 at the green table for Eintracht, so that the real longest series without defeat in the 6 games (with 4 wins and 2 draws) between the 2: 1 from April 6, 1942 and the already named highest FSV victory of December 9, 1945 was achieved.

The longest series of games that ended in a draw was in the seasons 1946/47 and 1947/48, when all 4 league derbies saw neither winners nor losers.

More details about the derby

In the 1920s, the derby was almost even. Both teams won 8 of the total of 18 derbies that were held in round-robin tournaments between 1920 and 1928 . The other two matches ended in a draw. In the same period (1920/21 to 1928/29) the FSV won even more championships (5) than the Eintracht (4) and achieved these successes in series between 1923 and 1927.

It was not until the 1929/30 season that Eintracht became temporarily dominant, winning 8 of the 12 championship derbies held between 1929 and 1933. Two each ended in a draw or the FSV won.

While the first season of the Gauliga (1933/34) and the Oberliga Süd (1945/46) began with two high victories (on March 4, 1934, Eintracht prevailed 6: 1, on December 9, 1945 it came to 6: 0 of the FSV mentioned earlier), the balance was relatively even in the following years. While Eintracht dominated in the early 1940s, the FSV gained the upper hand in the later war years .

If the derby balance in the first 11 years of the Oberliga Süd (1945/46 to 1955/56) was still relatively balanced (Eintracht won 7 of the 22 games, FSV 6 and the remaining 9 ended in a draw), then the dominance of Eintracht began , which has been the clear number 1 in Frankfurt since then and has not lost a league derby against the FSV.
