history

The Frankfurter Turnverein 1860 was founded in 1833 by August Ravenstein as "Turngemeinde" in Frankfurt am Main. Founded in the Vormärz period , the “Turngemeinde” soon fell victim to political decisions and was disbanded by the police in January 1848 after a gymnastics festival had been forbidden in 1847. Nevertheless, the first gymnasium in Frankfurt was opened in Seilerstraße beforehand. After a reconstitution of the "gymnastics community" in April of the same year, a politically less radical part, called the "gymnastics society", quickly split off. After the Frankfurt National Assembly failed in 1850, the two splinter groups were temporarily reunited, but this was dissolved again in 1852 .

Due to the good contact between the former members of the "Turngemeinde" - despite the dissolution, gymnastics continued in the gym, albeit under police supervision - a general meeting took place on April 23, 1860, at which the still existing "Frankfurter Turnverein 1860" officially took place Founded. After it was founded, the association had around 400 members. In 1867, in cooperation with other sports clubs in Frankfurt, a joint gym was opened on Ostendstrasse. Due to occasional floods and the occasional seizure of the hall by the military, the FTV decided to build a new gym. This was inaugurated at its current location in 1878.

On February 3, 1860, the Frankfurt Gymnastics Club was granted corporation rights by the Kaiser and König . These still present the principle of legal capacity , so that the FTV is not a registered association (eV), but an association under the old law .

In the following time the association expanded significantly. In addition to the sports department, a choir and a reading circle were founded . In 1879, the fencing department was founded, the oldest department still in existence today. A 30,000 square meter area was leased in Frankfurt-Niederrad , the Sandhöfer Wiesen, on which national and international sports competitions were held.

During the First World War , the association lost a large part of its members, but after the war it quickly reached its historically largest membership number with 3000 members.

In the time of National Socialism, the association shrank significantly to less than 850 members. Many members of the Jewish faith were expelled through the Gleichschaltung. The club had to sell its sports facility in Niederrad to the Adlerwerke Frankfurt. During the Second World War , the gym was bombed out, making it impossible to continue club life.

When the Allies re-allowed sports clubs in 1946, 70 members around Albert Bank came together to restart club operations. In 1954, the inauguration of the reconstruction of the old gym took place.

In 2017, the FTV discontinued its 20-year-old night sports offer. This was done due to increasingly declining interest. He is approved as a place of work with a place for a voluntary social year (FSJ) at the Sportjugend Hessen .

In the summer of 2018, the club's large sports hall (August-Ravenstein-Halle) was renovated. This was preceded by renovations of the third floor of the Ravenstein Center in the previous year. In total, the investments had a volume of 240,000 euros. In 2019, the fencing hall will be enlarged. The state of Hesse contributed 50,000 euros to the renovation work.

The FTV regularly organizes sports and games festivals for families. These always have a specific motto. The FTV is also committed to the inclusion of physically and mentally disabled people and has various offers for this. There is a cooperation with the German Olympic Sports Confederation .
