The Franklin River is a river in the southwest of the Australian state of Tasmania .
geography
River course
The river has its source at Mount Hugel in the Cheyne Range , which is in the southeast part of the Cradle Mountain Lake St. Clair National Park . From there it first flows south and crosses Lake Undine and Lake Dixon . East of Mount Gel , the Franklin River turns west and passes under the Lyell Highway west of Mount Aerosmith . He is now in the Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers National Park .
On the West Coast Range , not far from the southern tip of Lake Burbury , the river is diverted to the southwest and follows the Engineers Range . The Franklin River flows south from its southern end and flows into the Gordon River between the settlements of Grinings Landing and Goulds Landing .

history
The river was named after John Franklin , who was governor of Tasmania from 1836 to 1843 .
In the 1980s, a project to dam the river led to one of Australia's greatest environmental controversies. The plans to build the Franklin Dam were eventually dropped.
