Franz Bäke (born February 28, 1898 in Schwarzenfels , † December 12, 1978 in Bochum ) was a German major general in World War II .

Life

Bäke entered on May 19, 1915 during the First World War as a volunteer in the Grenadier Regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm I." (2nd East Prussian) No. 3 of the Prussian Army . Awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class, he was discharged from military service in January 1919 as an officer candidate in the Westphalian Foot Artillery Regiment No. 7 after the end of the war .

He then began studying dentistry in Würzburg, which he with a doctorate Dr. med. dent. Graduated in 1923. Bäke was a member of the Germania fraternity in Würzburg .

On April 1, 1937, Bäke was drafted into the reserve , completed two military exercises in the same year at Reconnaissance Department 6 and was appointed lieutenant in the reserve on December 1, 1937 . As such, Bäke was called up on August 1, 1939, before the start of the Second World War, and was used as a platoon leader in the light column of Panzerabwehrabteilung 65. From January 1, 1940, he was company commander in his anti-tank department while being promoted to first lieutenant in the reserve until the end of April 1941 . During this period he was wounded several times. When he was promoted to captain of the reserve, Bäke became leader of the Panzer Squadron of the 11th Panzer Regiment on May 1, 1941, and from the beginning of November he worked as an orderly officer at the regimental headquarters. On June 1, 1942 he was appointed commander of the II. Department and on August 1, 1942 with senior service from August 1, 1941, he was promoted to major in the reserve. In this position, Bäke received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on January 11, 1943 . Wounded again in mid-March 1943, Bäke remained with the troops and was initially commissioned with the command of his regiment, and on November 1, 1943, promoted to lieutenant colonel of the reserve as regimental commander. In the meantime, on August 1, 1943, he had been awarded the Oak Leaves Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (262nd award). In addition, on February 21, 1944, he was awarded the swords (49th award) to the Knight's Cross and on May 1, 1944 he was promoted to Colonel of the Reserve. From July 13, 1944, Bäke was in command of the Panzer Brigade 106 Feldherrnhalle .

With seniority from May 1, 1944, Bäke was taken into active service on January 1, 1945. After he had completed a division leader training course from January 24 to March 8, 1945, he was then commissioned to lead the 13th Panzer Division , which was being reorganized and then renamed Feldherrnhalle 2 Panzer Division . With his promotion to major general on April 20, 1945, he was confirmed as division commander. From May 8, 1945 until mid-1947, Bäke was a US prisoner of war .

Then he re-founded his practice and worked as a dentist in Hagen . Bäke died in 1978 as a result of a car accident in Bergmannsheil Hospital in Bochum .
