Franz Drexl

Franz Xaver Drexl (Latin Franciscus Drexl ; born November 25, 1885 in Gammelsdorf , † February 19, 1951 in Edenkoben ) was a German Byzantine and grammar school teacher.

Franz Drexl was the second born of a total of eleven children of the teacher Eduard Drexl (1856-1930) and his wife Franziska, née Schneider (1863-1945), although his older brother Eduard, born in December 1884, had died after 16 days. His brothers Urban (1887–1972), Eduard (1888–1965) and Andreas (1890–1976) also became teachers. Urban Drexl published two textbooks. His first marriage was to Hedwig Gschwendner (1890–1944). The marriage resulted in a son and two daughters. After the death of his first wife, he married the pharmacist's daughter and librarian Agnes Seiter (1901–1951) on October 3, 1944 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . He died at the age of only 65 after a long period of lung and heart disease.

life and work

Franz Drexl attended elementary school in Kammerberg , the Latin school in Scheyern Abbey and the humanistic grammar school in Freising . He studied Classical and Middle and Modern Greek Philology at the University of Munich . With the dissertation Achmet's dream book . Introduction and rehearsal of a critical text ( Oneirocriticon Achmetis ) he received his doctorate in 1909 under Karl Krumbacher . Then he passed the state examination for the higher teaching post and practiced in 1909/10 at the old grammar school in Regensburg . In 1910/11 he was tutor to the Baron von Frankenstein in Vilshofen , in 1911/12 he was prefect at the St. Emmeram study center in Regensburg, and from 1912 to 1917 he was a realteacher at the girls' college of the English girls in Regensburg. In January 1918 he became a high school teacher at the Ludwigsgymnasium in Munich , from 1926 he taught at the Wittelsbacher Gymnasium in Munich, of which he became director on October 1, 1948. From 1923 to 1933 he also had a teaching position for Greek style exercises at the University of Munich.

In the field of Byzantine studies, he mainly deals with the Greek dream books and the work of Michael Psellos . He has published numerous articles and reviews in specialist journals.

Especially during his time in Regensburg, when he had no scientific library at his disposal, he published numerous works for school lessons and young people at Verlag Habbel from 1913 to 1923 . His first work was the Wars of Liberation . As a result he gave u. a. Volumes with works by Richard Wagner , Emanuel Geibel , Jean Paul , Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Friedrich von Schiller , Gottfried von Strasbourg , Wilhelm Hauff and Clemens Brentano .

In 1923 he received the Zographospreis of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , in 1942 the silver medal Bene merenti of the Bavarian Academy and in 1942 he became a corresponding member of the Society for Byzantine Studies in Athens .
