Franz Kralicek (born January 6, 1907 in Brno , † July 13, 1943 in Vienna ) was an Austrian commercial artist and fresco artist .

Life

After attending the Brno Elementary and Citizens School, Kralicek studied at the Department of Reproduction Processes at the Graphic Education and Research Institute in Vienna. He continued his studies in autumn 1929 at the State School of Applied Arts in Vienna , where he specialized in poster design in Bertold Löffler's painting class . At the same time he also attended nude drawing courses with Reinhold Klaus and Albert Paris Gütersloh . On May 9, 1934, he broke off his studies and went on a three-month study trip to Greece and Turkey . From 1934 to 1938 Kralicek studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the master class with Ferdinand Andri . His artistic work was awarded the “Commendation Recognition”.

In the spring of 1937 he carried out the frescoes and sgraffiti at a student art exhibition in Naples .

After completing his training, Kralicek initially worked as a freelance graphic artist and fresco painter. His first major work was the sgraffito "Nobility of Work" on the facade of the house at Operngasse 24 in Vienna. In 1937 he created the frescoes in the Breitstetten parish church in Marchfeld .

In 1937 he met Elisabeth Benedikt (1897–1977) and married her in the spring of 1943. Together they opened the “Krali – Benedikt” atelier in Rathausstrasse 3/5, which in the period from 1938 to 1941 printed materials for the Niederdonau tourism association and Vienna delivered.

After Austria's annexation in March 1938, Kralicek became a member of the "Association of Visual Artists" and the " Reich Chamber of Culture " founded on November 15, 1938 . On January 2, 1940 he officially received the master's certificate.

Franz Kralicek worked from 1938 to 1939 as an assistant to Paul Kirnig at the School of Applied Arts, where he headed the workshop for printing processes and fresco painting. In 1941 he took over the specialist class for commercial, illustration and fashion graphics, but was drafted into the Wehrmacht . During his stationing in Hainburg he was commissioned to create the frescoes in the dining room of the barracks there. He then created frescoes in the dining rooms of the Eisenstadt barracks and the Vienna Arsenal , as well as in the horse stable in Znojmo .

In the drawing competition of the Wehrmacht, he won first prize for his works on the subjects of “Front and Home”, “War and Art” and “The Young Farmer in the East” and second prize in the category for the “Mountain Hunter” painting To draw. For the execution of his most important work, the painting of the Iron Curtain of the Opera House of the City of Vienna , Kralicek was temporarily released from the Wehrmacht in the summer of 1943. On the day he was supposed to start work, Franz Kralicek died at the age of 36 as a result of a heart attack . The curtain was made according to Kralicek's design by Rudolf Holzinger , Max Frey and Günther Baszel .

Kralicek's estate is in the Vienna Library in the City Hall.
