Franz Schuler (born October 3, 1962 in Kufstein ) is a former Austrian biathlete .
Life
Franz Schuler lives in Schwoich and started for PSV Innsbruck . He has been involved in biathlon since 1980, and a little later he was promoted to the national team of Austria. With Alfred Eder he belonged to the first generation of Austrian biathletes who reached the top of the world in the mid-1980s, a decade before the Austrians rose to become one of the strongest nations in biathlon.
Schuler first took part in a major event at the 1983 Biathlon World Championships in Antholz and finished 43rd in the sprint. The first start at the Winter Olympics followed in 1984 . In Sarajevo he reached 17th place in the sprint, was 30th in the individual and eighth in the relay race with Rudolf Horn , Walter Hörl and Eder. At the 1985 World Championships in Ruhpolding , Schuler was 38th in the individual and 40th in the sprint. A year later he achieved his greatest international success at the World Championships at Holmenkollen in Oslo behind Valeri Alexejewitsch Medwedzew and in front of André Sehmisch in second place in the sprint race. In the individual he came in 19th place, with the relay he was seventh. In 1987 he finished eighth in the sprint and 44th in the individual at Lake Placid. The next highlight was the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary , at which Schuler was 36th in the individual and 17th in the sprint, and with Anton Lengauer-Stockner , Bruno Hofstätter and Eder in fourth place, he missed a medal by just one place against Italy and in doing so, missed a medal in world class races like that Left GDR or Norway behind. In this 1987/88 season he won his only World Cup race with a sprint in Jyväskylä, Finland .
At the 1989 World Cup in Feistritz an der Drau , Schuler came 34th in the individual and 52nd in the sprint. The following year he achieved good results as 16th individual, 26th in the sprint and with Egon Leitner , Hofstätter and Eder as seventh and team fifth good results, which then became increasingly rare. In 1991 in Lahti the ranks 44 in the sprint and 19 in the individual were added. In 1992 he took part in his third Olympic Games in Albertville . He was 21st in the sprint, 49th in the individual and 12th in the relay race with Hofstätter, Leitner and Ludwig Gredler . In 1993 he started in Borowetz for the last time at a World Cup and ran to 59th place in the sprint and 14th place in the relay. The 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer ended his career , with Schuler finishing 30th in the sprint, 48th in the individual and ninth in relay with Wolfgang Perner , Gredler and Martin Pfurtscheller .
Nationally, Schuler won the sprint titles in 1986 and 1992 and four times in a row with the relay from 1988 to 1991.
