Franz Timmerman ( Russian Франц Тиммерман ; * 1644 in the Republic of the Seven United Provinces ; † 1702 in Russia ) was a Dutch - Russian merchant and teacher of Peter I.

Life

Since about 1665 Timmerman lived in the German suburb in Moscow , where there was a large Dutch community. When the young Peter I got a sextant he did not know and no Russian could explain the device to him, he looked for a specialist in the German suburbs and found Franz Timmerman in 1688. Timmerman was willing to instruct Peter in the use of the device if he was allowed to teach him arithmetic and geometry first . So Timmerman became Peter's teacher.

In May 1688 Peter I visited his great-uncle Nikita Ivanovich Romanov with Timmerman as a companion in the village of Ismailowo near Moscow and found a derelict English sailing boat in his barn that interested him. Peter commissioned Timmerman to look for a master to repair the boat, whereupon Timmerman suggested Carsten Brandt . The boat was brought to Preobrazhenskoye on the Jausa , where Brandt repaired the boat and fitted it with a mast and sails . This Peter the Great botik was named St. Nicholas , and Brandt was now Peter's first teacher in naval matters .

Timmerman became a consultant and friend to Peters I. Timmerman organized two trips to Western Europe and Peter's internship at the Amsterdam shipyard . In Russia, Timmerman led the construction of over 150 ships. As chief engineer, he took part in the first Azov campaign.

In 1701, the Chamowny parade ground was given to Timmerman for the production of canvas for the state, so that Timmerman built a canvas factory there.
