Franz Vogelsang

Franz Vogelsang (born September 22, 1899 in Essen - Altenessen , † June 26, 1979 in Wiesloch ) was a German politician during National Socialism and regional president in Aachen . During the war, Vogelsang took on air protection duties and made several advisory trips to German cities. In June 1944 he was awarded the War Merit Cross 1st Class with Swords for his commitment .

Life

After finishing school, Vogelsang was accepted into the royal evangelical teachers' seminar in Essen. Vogelsang had his first military service in France as a youth soldier in 1917 during the First World War , and in November 1917 he was a soldier in a foot artillery regiment. In the spring of 1918, he was deployed in Flanders and participated in the battles for the Kemmelberg and Ypres . In December 1918, Vogelsang was released from military service as a deputy sergeant . He was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class.

After the war, Vogelsang finished teacher training and was briefly employed as a teacher. He studied economics at the Universities of Cologne and Heidelberg . From 1924 to 1932 he was the syndic of an employers' association in the painting trade. In 1931 he joined the NSDAP ( membership number 544.838). In 1932 he joined the Sturmabteilung and became section head, then local group leader in Cologne-Bayenthal . In March 1933 he held the office of Gauamtsleiter, in May 1933 he was head of the municipal political department in the Gau Cologne-Aachen . In addition, he was department head in the office of "National Socialist Crafts, Trade and Industry Organizations" (NS-Hago) and the German Labor Front (DAF).

From 1933 to 1936 he was councilor of the city of Cologne and parliamentary group leader of the NSDAP and district inspector. At the same time he was accepted by the city administration in July 1933 a. a. Delegated to the board of the Kölnischer Kunstverein . As the successor to Eggert Reeder , Vogelsang acted as deputy district president in 1936/37, acting as a substitute for the administration of the office of district president. From May 1, 1937, he became regional president in Aachen and in 1939 a member of the Schutzstaffel (SS-No. 337.798). From 1940 to 1944 he was also responsible for Eupen-Malmedy . On July 1, 1944, he was appointed provincial commissioner for Brussels and Brabant, but did not take up the service because of the war situation. In October 1944 the Aachen government was relocated to Waldbröl , and in December 1944 he was appointed district administrator based in Gummersbach . Vogelsang achieved the rank of brigade leader in the SS at the end of January 1943.

In April 1945 Vogelsang served as a soldier in Glauchau for three days , was taken prisoner by the Americans and was released in August 1945 after intensive interrogation.

After the war, Franz Vogelsang renounced all political activity. He held various commercial activities, Franz Vogelsang spent his twilight years in Heidelberg, where he was involved in local urban and social associations, co-founded associations and was also elected chairman on various occasions. As a passionate collector, he collected data on the history of the Vogelsang family all his life and published them as well as the booklet Der Wolfsbrunnen bei Heidelberg, which is still much sought after today .

  3. Other sources, according to which Vogelsang was President of the Government from 1936 to 1945, are imprecise. It is correct that he was only President of the Government from 1937, before that he was only Deputy (as stated). Such functions officially ended with the end of the war, but in Aachen as early as 1944, as the city was already occupied in 1944 and this position was dissolved.
