Franz Adalbert Eduard Robert Wolf (born June 17, 1898 in Heidelberg , † March 1, 1984 in Karlsruhe ) was a German physicist .

Family and education

The Evangelical baptized Franz Wolf, son of the astronomer and director of the State Observatory Heidelberg-Königstuhl Univ. Prof. Max Wolf and his wife Gisela, née Merx, were drafted into the First World War as a soldier after graduating from high school . He then devoted himself to studying mathematics and physics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , in 1924 he was awarded a Dr. phil. nat. PhD . He also passed the state examination for teaching at secondary schools in the subjects of mathematics, physics, chemistry , geology , mineralogy , philosophy and history of literature .

Franz Wolf married the student trainee Dr. phil. Mally Luise Theodora Untermann. The son Konrad came from this connection. He died in Karlsruhe at the beginning of March 1984 at the age of 85.

Professional background

Franz Wolf resigned after his doctorate at a position as trainee teacher, in 1926 he became an assistant to Carl Ramsauer at the Physics Institute of the Technische Hochschule in Danzig , 1927 habilitated himself as a lecturer for Experimental and Theoretical Physics . Wolf, who acted as head of the Physics Institute from 1928 to 1932, was promoted to extraordinary professor in 1934 .

In 1937 Wolf followed Walter Weizel's successor as a non-civil servant associate professor and head of the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the Technical University of Karlsruhe , and in 1940 he was appointed as a scheduled associate professor. In addition, Franz Wolf took over representations in Dresden and Göttingen until 1945 and, from 1942, in Freiburg .

After he was temporarily released in 1946 on instructions from the military government , in 1950 he was given the title and academic rights of a full professor at the Technical University of Karlsruhe. In addition, he was appointed head of the Institute for Theoretical Physics. Franz Wolf was promoted to full professor in 1961 and retired in 1966 . Wolf stood out in particular through contributions relating to his area of ​​expertise.
