Frederick Orpen Bower (born November 4, 1855 in Ripon , North Yorkshire , England, † April 11, 1948 ibid) was an English botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Bower ".

Live and act

After attending the Repton School and undergraduate studies at Trinity College of the University of Cambridge , Bower studied from 1877 to 1878 with the German botanist Julius von Sachs at the University of Würzburg and in 1879 with Anton de Bary at the University of Strasbourg . From 1880 to 1885 he was assistant and instructor of botany with Thomas Huxley at the University of London . From 1885 to 1925 he was Regius Professor of Botany at the University of Glasgow .

With his studies of the generation change in primitive land plants, especially ferns , Bower made a significant contribution to the understanding of the lineage and evolution of these plants. He is known for his interpolation theory, which should explain why in ferns - in contrast to mosses - the sporophyte is more strongly developed than the gametophyte .

Bower was a member of the Linnean Society of London , from which he received the Linnaeus Medal in 1909 . In 1891 he was elected as a member (" Fellow ") in the Royal Society , which awarded him in 1910 with the Royal Medal and in 1938 with the Darwin Medal . In 1886 he was elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh , 1909 to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , 1932 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1935 to the corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .
