Jensen, son of Jens Johann Jensen (1774–1824), who was born in Husum , and his wife Johanne Marie, née Prom (1793–1878), attended, like his brother, the later politician Christian Jensen (1823–1884), the cathedral school in his native Bergen . In 1840 he completed a theology degree. In 1841 he enrolled to study painting at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf , after taking landscape painting lessons from Hans Leganger Reusch (1800–1854) in Bergen. In Düsseldorf the history painter Karl Ferdinand Sohn was his most important teacher. Even Rudolf Wiegmann taught him. In 1844, at the end of his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy, Jensen joined forces with Gustav Jacob Canton , Henry Ritter , Rudolf Jordan , Hans Fredrik Gude , Rudolf von Normann and Wilhelm Camphausen to form the democratic and academically critical group Crignic . Their name was formed from the initial letters of their members. The group was a forerunner of the Malkasten artists' association founded in 1848. He stayed in Düsseldorf until 1845. In that year he created one of his main works, the portrait Ingeborg ved havet (Ingeborg am Meer) .

After staying in Munich , where he met his wife Ursula Franziska Reuter, née Schwaighart (1821–1910), and after a trip to Italy , Jensen returned to Bergen and tried to live as a portrait painter. He was also interested in the theater . He helped the musician Ole Bull in 1849/1850 in founding the Norske Theater by instructing amateur actors. The Norske Theater later gave birth to Den Nationale Scene , the oldest theater in Norway.

In 1854 he took a job as pastor of Bø (Nordland) , in 1863 he moved to the rectory in Steigen. The altarpiece he created in 1869/1870 as a triptych for the Vågan Church in Kabelvåg in Lofoten shows that he was still painting during this period . It shows Jesus in Gethsemane , whom an angel strengthens ( Lk 22.43  EU ), surrounded by the sleeping disciples.

Jensen also worked as a politician from 1862 to 1864. During this time he represented the voters of the Nordland office as a member of the Storting . As a philosophical writer he was only known in 1874 through the posthumously published text Treenighed paavist som Livets Lov ("Trinity as Law of Life") by Marcus Jacob Monrad .
