Carl Friedrich Rudolf Ernst von Normann, offspring of the Pomeranian-Rügischen noble family von Normann , was a son of the Prussian lieutenant Carl Wilhelm von Normann († 1806) and his wife Friedericke Luise von Owstin (1784-1847), who died a few years after their death married her first husband on March 30, 1811 in Stettin to the Prussian officer Felix von Borcke . A change of garrison meant that the family moved from Berlin to Düsseldorf on the Rhine in 1817 , where Normann attended the Lyceum . For the school year 1823/1824 he was enrolled at the Royal Gymnasium in Koblenz after another garrison change . In the fall of 1827 he joined the Kaiser Franz Garde Grenadier Regiment No. 2 in Berlin. On May 16, 1832, he became second lieutenant , on May 13, 1845, he was first lieutenant in the 4th Guards Landwehr Infantry Regiment in Düsseldorf.

Parallel to his military service, which he resigned on May 26, 1847, he turned to the fine arts in Düsseldorf. From 1834 to 1843 he studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf , after having attended the drawing school on Sundays as a student under Karl Friedrich Schäffer , Ernst Carl Thelott and Lambert Cornelius . He mainly took the landscape classes of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer . In 1843 Wilhelm Schadow taught him in his master class. Together with Wilhelm Camphausen , Henry Ritter , Rudolf Jordan , Hans Fredrik Gude , Frederik Nicolai Jensen and Gustav Jacob Canton , von Normann founded the democratic and academically critical group Crignic in 1844 , whose name is composed of the first letters of the members. He was also a member of their successor, the Malkasten artists' association . His interests were also in the theater and music, which he pursued by frequent visits to the Düsseldorf Theater , where Karl Immermann performed pieces and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy conducted the opera.

Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern in Düsseldorf, with whom he was a close friend, recommended Normann to the Duke of Anhalt-Dessau , who appointed him manager of the court theater in 1866 and chamberlain in 1867. In 1874, von Normann also worked on the architecture of the Dessau residential palace .
