Sigmund Freud's father Jacob Freud came from today's Tysmenyzja , Galicia , today Ukraine , into today's Příbor , Czech Republic , then the Austrian Empire . His mother came from Brody and grew up in Odessa . Jacob later moved with his children to Vienna via Leipzig . Sigmund was the oldest child from his father's third marriage. He had two older half-brothers from his first marriage who both moved to Manchester . Sigmund's youngest half-nephew even died in South Africa shortly before the line died out, as none of the six half-nephews or nieces had children. His father's marriage to his second wife had remained childless. Sigmund married Martha Bernays , his younger sister Martha's older brother Ely. She emigrated to the USA in 1892 . Regina Deborah's two children died at a young age by suicide in the First World War . Her sister Marie married her cousin. Her daughter Martha publicly lived as a man before she committed suicide after her husband's suicide. Her younger brother drowned. Pauline Regine emigrated to the USA, but then moved back before her daughter moved to the USA again. Alexander Gotthold Ephraim died in Canada . Sigmund Freud emigrated to London with his wife Martha and daughter Anna after the annexation of Austria . The four of his five sisters who remained behind, Regine Debora (Rosa), Marie (Mitzi), Esther Adolfine (Dolfi) and Pauline Regina (Paula), whose departure to France planned for autumn 1938 failed, fell victim to the Holocaust in 1942/43 .
