Fridolin Kopp

Fridolin II. Kopp (born October 8, 1691 in Rheinfelden , † August 17, 1757 in Muri ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk . From 1751 until his death he was prince abbot of the Muri monastery in the free offices (in today's canton of Aargau ).

Life

His father Johann Anton Kopp was the town clerk of Rheinfelden, his mother was Anna Maria Zech. Fridolin Kopp came in 1704 in the convent school of Muri and laid four years later the profession from 1715 followed the ordination . In the monastery school he worked as a professor of rhetoric and poetry, from 1720 as a professor of theology and philosophy. From 1725 to 1729 and from 1731 to 1745 he worked as secretary for the Swiss Benedictine Congregation . In the intervening years, Kopp stayed at Disentis Monastery , where he temporarily held the office of dean . After his return he officiated in Muri as archivist, chapter secretary and chancellery director, and from 1745 as an economist.

Kopp carried out intensive historical research, in particular on the early history of the abbey and its founding family, the Habsburgs . In 1737 he published a treatise on the genealogy of the early Habsburgs, followed in 1750 by the publication of a source edition of Acta Murensia , the oldest document on the subject. Three weeks after Gerold Haimb's death , Kopp was elected third prince abbot of Muri on March 16, 1751. From 1754 he carried out visits to other monasteries on behalf of the Benedictine Congregation . He is buried in the Marienkapelle of the monastery church.
