Friedrich Burmeister (born March 24, 1888 in Wittenberge , † July 25, 1968 in East Berlin ) was a German politician and minister for post and telecommunications in the GDR .

Life

Burmeister, born in 1888 as the son of a locomotive driver , joined the postal service in 1905 . After the examination to become a postal assistant and his military service in an infantry and telecommunications unit in the First World War , he worked as a postal assistant in 1919, first in Berlin-Reinickendorf and then in the Oberpostdirektion Schwerin , where he was promoted to postal inspector.

He was a member of the Republican Party of Germany (RPD) in 1924 and of the DDP from 1926 to 1930 . In 1939 he was promoted to Chief Post Inspector and transferred to Karlsbad , from 1943 to the Reich Post Office in Aussig .

In 1945 he returned to Schwerin, where he worked for the Oberpostdirektion, and joined the CDU . From 1946 to 1949 he was Minister for Labor and Social Affairs of the State of Mecklenburg , then until 1963 Minister for Post and Telecommunications in the GDR . At the same time he was a member of the People's Chamber from 1949 to 1958 and a member of the main board of the CDU from 1950 to 1968.

On May 6, 1955, Burmeister received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver, in 1963 also the Patriotic Order of Merit, 1959 the GDR Medal of Merit , the Labor Banner in 1960 and the Bar of Honor for the Patriotic Order of Merit in 1968.
