Friedrich Georg Göthe (born September 6, 1657 in Kannawurf ; † November 10, 1730 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German master tailor , from 1705 guest owner at the Weidenhof in Frankfurt am Main and grandfather of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .

Life

Friedrich Georg Göthe was born in 1657 as the son of the farrier and later councilor in Artern / Unstrut Hans Christian Göthe (around 1633–1694) and Sibylla Göthe, née Werner . The trained cloth maker lived for some time in Lyon ; from this time on he wrote himself Göthé (with Accent Aigu ). As a devout Lutheran , he had to leave France after the edict of Nantes was repealed in 1685. He settled in Frankfurt am Main as a master tailor, where on April 18, 1687 he married Anna Elisabeth Lutz (born March 19, 1667 in Frankfurt am Main), with whom he had five children. By marrying, he also acquired Frankfurt citizenship . Since then he has written his name Goethe .

After the death of his first wife on August 6, 1700, he married Cornelia Schelhorn geb. Walther (born September 27, 1668 in Frankfurt am Main, † March 26, 1754 ibid), widow of the innkeeper Johannes Schelhorn , who died in 1704 . Through this marriage, Goethe became the owner of the Gasthof Zum Weidenhof an der Zeil , at that time one of the most distinguished inns in Frankfurt. In addition, he built an extensive wine shop ; this was the basis of the family fortune, which still ensured his grandson financial independence.

In 1710, the third of their three children, Johann Caspar Goethe , the father of the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , was born. Friedrich Georg Goethe died in 1730 at the age of 73 and was buried in the Peterskirchhof . He left a fortune of around 100,000 guilders, which was great for the time . Since one of his sons from his first marriage, the master pewter Hermann Jacob Goethe , was a member of the Council of the Free Imperial City , his younger son Johann Caspar was denied advancement in the city patriciate .
