Friedrich II. Von Graben , also Friedrich the Younger (* at Kornberg Castle ; † before 1463 ibid) was an Austrian nobleman who came from the noble family of the Lords of Graben . The Lord von Graben was one of the richest Styrian noblemen of his time and, among other things, a councilor, assessor of the Imperial Court of Justice and commissioner of Emperor Friedrich III. On the part of the emperor he was also appointed chamber master of (ore) duke Siegmund (Austria-Tyrol) of Tyrol . Friedrich was lord of Kornberg and owned the rulership of Marburg including the Obermarburg , the Marburg office and castle , burgrave of Riegersburg and lord of the glory of Riegersburg .

Origin and descendants

Friedrich II came from a Styrian branch of the von Graben family, of the Kornberg line on Kornberg , which was highly respected. His parents were Friedrich I. von Graben and Catarina von Sumerau (also Catarina von Saurau, De Sommereck, von Somereck, called von Summeregk , daughter of a Nicl von Sumerau or Niklas von Somereck, St. Sumerau); his brothers were Andreas von Graben zu Sommeregg and Leonhard (Lienart, Linart) von Graben, the founder of the first Tyrolean line of the family. A wide-ranging relationship leads him to the Herberstein and Breuner families , in the person of his stepson Hans Breuner. In 1438 he married Elisabeth Steinwald von Fladnitz (widow of Hertlein von Teuffenbach ), from whom three children came:

  • Dorothea von Graben († 1519), mentioned in 1462 as the imperial maid of honor ; married to Georg von Kainach , their sons Wilhelm (married to Margaretha von Saurau ) and Johan (Hanns) (second marriage to Dorothea von Kuenburg ) and their daughter Eva (who also married a Kuenburger to Johannes; he lived from 1500 to 1560 and was a nurse at Werfen and Moosham in Salzburg)
  • Wolfgang von Graben († before 1468), borrower of the Styrian area "within the Drau"
  • Ulrich III. von Graben (1415–1486), Governor of Styria, Burgrave of Marburg and Graz, who under Emperor Friedrich III. was a high official and trusted councilor of the same.
  • Reinprecht V. von Graben (named between 1456 and 1493), imperial keeper of the Strudengau

Political career

Friedrich also had a close relationship with the Konradinian line on the Graben at Alt-Grabenhofen Castle ; so sealed Reinprecht III. vom Graben contracts from Friedrich I and Friedrich II., a marriage certificate from Katrey von Graben, a sister (?) of Friedrich and Niclas von Roggendorf and in 1399 in a sales certificate from the two Friedrichs to the Bishop of Freising, Berthold von Wehingen . The interesting thing here is that all seals are still in good condition and the two Friedrichs have the newer coat of arms with the upright spade, while Reinprecht shows the old trench coat of arms with the sloping beam.

In 1401 Friedrich II. Von Graben was enfeoffed as burgrave of Riegersburg by Rudolph I von Walsee with the rule of Riegersburg. Further mortgages by the Seckau monastery took place between 1400 and 1414. In 1443, Frederick II received the tower and the village of Neudorf in Styria as a princely fief , as well as the village of Pölan with three hubs, and two farms in Altendorf ( Wolfsberg ), and a farm in Wanofezen with its share in the village Bergrechte and the wine tithe in Katzian. In 1446 he was named among the Styrian estates , as well as in the contingent against the Hungarians in the same year. Friedrich von Graben was a councilor to Emperor Friedrich III. In 1446 he was appointed by the emperor as chamber master for his cousin (ore) Duke Siegmund (Austria-Tyrol) of Tyrol . In 1447 the emperor bequeathed the fief of the late Ulrich von Würfel to him. Furthermore, he was awarded by those in the Lower Austrian Nussdorf ob der Traisen with the local Urfahr, with the possession of half of the village of Endleinsdorf, the fiefs of Enzesfeld and Praitstetten.

Shortly before 1450 Von Graben sold half the village of Enzesfeld under the Bisamberg to Emperor Friedrich , who in 1450 lent it to Ulrich von Eyczing in place of the still underage Ladislaus Postumus . 1450 documents attest Friedrich von Graben as councilor and authorized representative of Emperor Friedrich III. Three years later, a certificate attesting to a mortgage note from the emperor to Von Graben.

Von Graben's financial wealth is also revealed in a mortgage note to Wolfgang V. von Walsee , the Colonel-Marshal in Austria and Styria and captain of the Archduchy ob der Enns, to whom he lent 1,800 Hungarian ducats in 1454. For this, the Walseer had pledged 27 goods in southern Styria in addition to Marburg Castle , as well as other goods in the Duchy of Carniola and the County of Cilli. In 1456 the important rule of Marburg , the Obermarburg , the office of Marburg an der Drau and the Marburg Castle to Friedrich and his son Ulrich III. awarded in court. The legal and feudal dispute against Wolfgang von Walsee was only ended in 1462 with the judgment that Friedrich and Ulrich III. the rule of Marburg, Obermarburg, as well as the office and castle of Marburg was awarded as an imperial fiefdom.

Friedrich von Graben showed his connection to the roots of his family in Carniola with the fact that in 1461 he appeared as one of the founders and signatories in which Laibach was elevated to a diocese (see Archdiocese of Laibach ).
