Friedrich Schmidtke

Friedrich Schmidtke (born May 3, 1891 in Wurzen , Saxony ; † July 22, 1969 in Münster ) was a German Catholic theologian ( Old Testament scholar ) and an ancient orientalist .

Friedrich Schmidtke, son of a master shoemaker , attended grammar schools in Dresden and Prague . From the winter semester of 1912/13 he studied Catholic theology and ancient oriental studies at the University of Breslau . In the winter semester of 1913/14 he passed the first and in the summer semester of 1915 the second theological exam and finished his priestly training at the seminary in Paderborn . In Breslau he was in 1916 with Bruno Meissner with the dissertation Asarhaddons governorship in Babylonia and his accession to the throne in Assyria 681 BC. Chr. To Dr. phil. PhD . After his ordination , he worked as a chaplain in Dresden from 1916 to 1924 . In 1924, with the thesis on The Sources of Immigration of Israel in Canaan, the doctorate to Dr. theol. A year later, after completing his habilitation, he became a private lecturer in Old Testament exegesis at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Wroclaw, where he was appointed a non-official adjunct professor in 1933 . From 1928 to 1930 he went on long study trips to the Orient, during which time he was a teacher at St. George's College in Constantinople in 1928 and a scholarship from the Oriental Institute of the Görres Society in Jerusalem in 1929/30 . In 1933/34 he was a brief professor at the State Academy in Braunsberg . On March 7, 1934, his book The Immigration of Israel in Canaan was placed on the index of forbidden books by the Faith Congressional due to his criticism of the Pentateuch .

As a result, his ecclesiastical teaching license was withdrawn and he was only able to teach ancient oriental sciences in a philosophy faculty. In 1937 he became a permanent adjunct professor at the University of Münster , and in the winter semester of 1944/45 he was a professor at the University of Greifswald . In 1956 Schmidtke became a full professor (full professor for history and culture of the ancient Orient) at the University of Münster, in 1959 he retired and was succeeded by Wolfram von Soden .
