Life

origin

Friedrich came from the Hessian noble family Solms . He was a son of Volrath zu Solms-Rödelheim (1762-1818) and his wife Sophie, née Countess zu Solms-Laubach (1771-1807). Karl zu Solms-Rödelheim was his older brother.

Military career

Solms had been in Austrian service since August 1813, initially as a lieutenant in the “Fürst Schwarzenberg” regiment. He took part in the battles near Hanau , Brienne , Arcis-sur-Aube , Heilig-Kreuz , Nogent and Troyes during the Wars of Liberation in 1813/14 . In April 1814 he was promoted to first lieutenant and was awarded the war commemorative coin for his behavior in the battle near Lusigny . After the war, Solms took his leave in mid-August 1816 and became a trainee lawyer with the government in Münster .

On September 23, 1817, Solms joined the Prussian Army as a prime lieutenant , was initially aggregated to the 11th Hussar Regiment and was assigned in mid-July 1819. After being assigned to the teaching squadron, he rose to the rank of captain and chief of the 3rd squadron until mid-January 1828 . When riots broke out in Münster in December 1837 as a result of the arrest of Archbishop Clemens August Droste zu Vischering , Solms was commissioned to calm the situation. Through his energetic behavior he was able to restore calm with his hussars, but this made himself unpopular with the Catholic nobility in the region and thereupon became adjutant in the Gouvernement Berlin in June 1838 . Six months later, Solms was appointed adjutant to Prince Waldemar of Prussia and in this position was promoted to major at the end of March 1839 . This was followed in May 1844 by his command to serve with the Guard Dragoon Regiment , until Solms was finally appointed wing adjutant to King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in early November 1845 . He was promoted to lieutenant colonel at the end of March 1846 and was initially commissioned to lead the 2nd Guard Uhlan (Landwehr) regiment on December 7, 1846, while remaining in his position as wing adjutant . On September 23, 1847, Solms was appointed regimental commander and promoted to colonel in early May 1849 . On September 22, 1851, he was given the command of the 13th Cavalry Brigade in Münster and was the commander of this brigade from March 11, 1852 to January 7, 1853 . With promotion to major general, Solms then took his leave wearing the uniform of the generals à la suite of the king.

Solms was a knight of the Order of St. John and the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. He died unmarried.
