Der Blaue Jan is a German television film by Marc Rensing from 2018. It is the sixth episode of the Friesland television series .

action

In Leer there is the old custom of the blue jans , in which four men disguised as devilish birds roam the streets with harpoons and mainly frighten women. The women's representative Gesa Dieken is a staunch opponent of this misogynist custom. When she is found killed by a harpoon, suspicion falls on the blue Jans , who also include Özlügül's new police partner, Henk Cassens. In order to relieve Cassens, the two police officers investigate on their own alongside their superior, Commissioner Jan Brockhorst. The self-proclaimed forensic scientist Insa Scherzinger also secures the first traces at the crime scene, which Brockhorst does not hide. Based on the age of the feathers on the costumes, it is clear that a fifth Blue Jan must have been on the way.

In the course of the investigation, there are suspicions against Weert Dieken, the victim's husband, who strictly refuses to have killed his wife. Gesa Dieken owned a piece of land that is now worth a small fortune as building land, which Weert Dieken is now inheriting. On the day of the crime he was in the town hall, but not at the time of the crime. Before Özlügül and Cassens can find concrete evidence against Dieken, he is killed in his house. Since a harpoon was also used here, the same perpetrator is assumed.

Cassens suspects that the possible sale of the property provides the motive for the murders. When doing research in this direction, it comes to light that some time ago an investor bought various pieces of land that have now been turned into building land. This lead leads to city treasurer Detlef Ackermann, who had the land bought through a straw man . He also knew that a new Blauer Jan costume was made for advertising purposes and kept in the town hall. But he has an alibi for the time of the crime and thus remains at large. Özlügül does not want to accept this decision so easily and secretly spies on Ackermann. She finds the fifth costume in his shed without realizing that the real culprit only placed it here to mislead the investigators. Özlügül is knocked down and imprisoned. When she doesn't show up for work the next day, her colleague goes looking for her. Using the last mobile phone location, Cassens arrives at Ackermann's property, but cannot find Özlügül.

In the meantime, there are increasing references to the fisherman Piet Grieffenhagen, who was previously unrelated to the murders. A year ago, Weert Dieken negligently caused an accident in which Grieffenhagen's brother was killed. Piet Grieffenhagen had worn the new Blue Jan costume for the advertising shoots and knew about it. Cassens confronts him and learns from him that Gesa Dieken wanted to fob him and his claims with "a ridiculous ten thousand euros". Only now does Cassens notice how traumatized Grieffenhagen still is from the death of his brother. Since Cassens has known Piet Grieffenhagen since he was a child, he is unable to shoot him. While Cassens is looking for his colleague, Grieffenhagen goes out to sea with the tied Özlügül in a boat, where he kills himself with her gun.

background

Süher Özlügül's colleague Jens Jensen ( Florian Lukas ) will be replaced from this episode by Henk Cassens ( Maxim Mehmet ), as Jensen had switched to another department at his own request.

The Blue Jan served as the embodiment of the devil and the disguise of sailors in olden times to put women back on the curb after the long absence of their husbands.

Reviews

Harald Keller from tittelbach.tv wrote: “The crime story [...] follows tried and tested patterns that have lately been almost a little overused. The appropriation of the humor typical of the series […] and the quirks of the main characters seems a little less successful, but could also be a sign of a further development of the characters. "

Ulrich Feld noted in his review in the Frankfurter Neue Presse that the authors "came up with a finely ramified plot that entertains excitingly with unexpected twists, crisp dialogues and, at the end, a well-measured dose of tragedy". He found the newly introduced figure of Henk Cassens a bit pale compared to his predecessor Jensen ( Florian Lukas ).

Julian Miller Quotenmeter.de evaluated critically: "Friesland 'normally like because of its unhurried, humorous, native, here but not ingratiating or transfiguring duct. In contrast to numerous similar crime series, one does not want to tell anything of social concern on a second level, nor does it want to demonstrate decidedly clichéd local color. The new episode differs from these features, perhaps even blatantly. It has a theme: equality and equality and the area of tension between (outdated? Sexist?) Traditions and the claim of a modern society to leave these (sexist and outdated?) Rituals behind. However, this makes them susceptible to a problem that causes numerous regional thrillers to crash on German television: superficiality. "

The Frankfurter Neue Presse said: “The new 'Friesland' episode has to contend with a difficult circumstance, namely the loss of Jens Jessen. The mild and kind-hearted [former] law enforcement officer Jensen and his ambitious colleague Süher Özlügül (Sophie Dal) complemented each other excellently, as the 'Friesland' series made an impression with its witty secondary characters.
