Frits Uldall (1895)

Johannes Frederik (Frits) Christian Uldall (born February 11, 1839 in Fredericia , † February 21, 1921 in Randers ) was a Danish architect and preservationist .

Life

Frits Uldall was the son of the city physician Frederik Adolph Uldall and his wife Elisabeth Johanne Sophie Sick. After graduating from the Sorø Academy in 1856, Frits Uldall became a workshop student at the Polytechnic School. In 1859 he received his journeyman's certificate as a carpenter. At the same time he studied in the years 1857 to 1863 at the architecture school of the art academy . During that period he was a draftsman for Christian Frederik Hansen and Johan Daniel Herholdt for four years. Uldall was a lieutenant in the German-Danish War in 1864.

After the war, Uldall worked from 1865 to 1867 as a draftsman at Peto, Brassey & Betts , the main office for the layout of the railroad for Jutland and Funen. From 1868 he had his own office. He also ran a drawing school for young craftsmen. He was an appraiser for churches and parsonages in various Jutland probsties and from 1871 to 1888 supervisor for churches in North Jutland . He was also a member of the board of the 'Antiquarian Monuments Conservation' ( Antikvariske Mindesmærkers Bevarelse ), including the Royal Old Norse Museum. He was a knight of the Dannebrog Order .

Frits Uldall was very interested in history and made many trips to Jutland and abroad over the years, where he sketched churches and other building details, which he later used as templates for elements in his architectural work. He traveled to Tyrol and Rome 1867-68, Germany and Austria 1878, Sweden 1883, the Rhineland , Holland and Belgium 1886, Stockholm 1896, Germany 1898, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1905, 1908, Lübeck 1899 and Germany, Gotland and Stockholm 1910.

The art academy supported him with a grant (1869) to investigate village churches. The Carlsbergfond promoted the investigation of old church bells in Schonen , Halland , Blekinge and Sønderjylland 1886-87 and the Danish state supported it several times thereafter. As a restoration architect, he was shaped by the maxim that every old building should be restored to its original state. The numerous repairs to churches and other buildings were not always based on documented studies. Uldall was also interested in prehistoric archeology and worked for the Danish National Museum with the indication of prehistoric monuments on maps. He also took part in the land-covering descriptions of the Harden .

In 1894 he received the silver medal from the Dutch government for his work Nederlandsche Kerkklokken in Denemarken .

Uldall was a Freemason and, together with Eggert Achen, drew the box building for the Danish Order of Freemasons in Randers .

Uldall married first on June 6, 1866 in Butterup Henriette Sophie Torst (born October 30, 1844 in Løvenborg: † March 10, 1874 in Randers), daughter of the estate manager, judiciary Frederik Christian Torst and Johanne Margrethe Neergaard. The second marriage was on June 1, 1875 in Mejlby with Inger Kirstine Mohnsen (born March 23, 1850 in Kalstrup, † October 19, 1940 in Copenhagen), daughter of the proprietor Mogens Christensen Mohnsen and Else Jensdatter Grosen.
