Fritz Birrenkoven

Fritz Birrenkoven (born November 1, 1878 in Munich ; † August 30, 1939 there ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ) and singing teacher .

Life

Fritz Birrenkoven, like his older brother Willi (1865–1955), started a career as a singer after completing his vocal training at the Düsseldorf Conservatory . In 1897 he made his stage debut at the Düsseldorf Opera House in the role of Max in “ Der Freischütz ”.

This was followed by engagements at various opera houses in Germany, from 1898 to 1900 at the Hamburg City Theater , from 1900 to 1901 at the City Theater of Danzig , from 1901 to 1904 at the Hoftheater Darmstadt , from 1904 to 1905 at the Nationaltheater Berlin and from 1905 to 1913 at the Elberfeld City Theater before he was appointed to the Munich Court Opera , later the Bavarian State Opera , in 1913, where he made a successful career until 1925.

The artist performed mainly in lyrical tenor roles and appeared in several premieres in Munich , such as on March 28, 1916 as First Soldier in " Violanta " by Erich Wolfgang Korngold , on June 12, 1917 in the role of Bishop of Budoja in " Palestrina " by Hans Pfitzner or on November 30, 1920 in " Die Vögel " by Walter Braunfels . He had further successes in guest performances and concerts.

After his resignation from the stage, Birrenkoven worked as a singing teacher in Munich and worked as a stage manager at the Munich Court Opera until 1928 .
