Fritz Fröhlich (painter, 1910)
Fritz Fröhlich (born May 13, 1910 in Linz , † November 19, 2001 ibid) was an Austrian painter and poet .
Life
Fritz Fröhlich came from a family of railway workers and attended elementary school on the Dürnberg near Ottensheim in Upper Austria .
Between 1929 and 1937 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Wilhelm Dachauer and Ferdinand Andri . In 1937 he took part in the exhibition “Austrian Contemporary Art” in the former Südbahnhalle in Linz and began to work as a freelance artist. As early as 1938 his artistic development was interrupted by a studio fire on Dürnberg near Ottensheim. All youth work - with the exception of some outsourced work - were destroyed.
In 1940 Fröhlich was drafted into the Wehrmacht and moved into the Kagran barracks . In 1941 he married Beatrix Weißgärber. In the early summer of the same year he was transferred to the Southeastern European Front on the Black Sea and in 1945 fled from American captivity.
From 1946 Fritz Fröhlich began with various artistic experiments. His work was initially strongly influenced by his war experiences. A visit to the Picasso exhibition in Munich in 1952 was the decisive factor in his turn to analytical cubism while maintaining the representational.
A trip to Spain in 1961 was the reason for Fröhlich's examination of the Moorish culture and the historical personality of Charles V.
In 1979 a traveling exhibition was shown in the gallery of the Vienna State Opera , in the Upper Austrian Art Association , in the Landesmuseum Oldenburg , in the Nassauischer Kunstverein in Wiesbaden , in the Alpirsbach gallery and in the Landesgirokasse in Stuttgart . In the same year, 1979, the artist was honored with a "One Man Show" by Galerie Apfelbaum at Art Basel .
In 1983, a museum dedicated to him was opened in Wilhering Abbey , where Fröhlich and his wife spent most of his life with the Fritz Fröhlich Collection .
In 2000 the Nordico City Museum in Linz showed a large retrospective on the occasion of his 90th birthday.
Fritz Fröhlich died on November 19, 2001 as a result of a fall.
