Fritz Knapp (art historian)

Fritz Knapp (born October 29, 1870 in Halle (Saale) , † 1938 in Würzburg ) was a German art historian .

Life

Fritz Knapp, son of the Halle-based publisher Wilhelm Georg Knapp (1840–1908), studied philosophy in Marburg and Halle from 1890 , but then moved to Bonn and studied art history there with Carl Justi . He continued these studies in Berlin , Munich and Basel . During the semester break, study trips took him to Italy, France, Spain and England. He received his doctorate in Basel at Easter 1896 under Heinrich Wölfflin .

From October 1897 to the end of 1904 he worked in the Berlin museum service - mostly in the Gemäldegalerie and at the Nationalgalerie - as an assistant, among others with Wilhelm von Bode . On March 11, 1905, he completed his habilitation with Wölfflin, who had moved to Berlin in 1901 . From September 24, 1906, Knapp taught for one semester as an associate professor at the University of Greifswald .

From 1907 to 1936 he was the first professor of art history at the University of Würzburg . His professorship , installed in the summer semester 1907, was converted into a professorship on 7 June 1921st In Würzburg, Knapp read thirty years on art history from the early Middle Ages to modern times; dealt in the lectures with the Italian and German Renaissance as well as the Baroque .

Initially a member of the German National People's Party , he joined the NSDAP in May 1933 (membership number 3107716).
