Fritz Weber (economic historian)

Fritz Weber (born February 22, 1947 in Knittelfeld in Upper Styria , † May 13 or 14, 2020 in Vienna ), also known as an author in the cultural field under the name Derek Weber , was an Austrian economic historian and cultural critic . His main focus was on the one hand research in the field of the economic history of the 20th century and on the other hand working as a music critic and dramaturge .

Life

Weber began studying history and German at the University of Graz in 1967 and continued at the Ruhr University in Bochum and at the University of Salzburg . At the beginning of 1977 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on contemporary history for Dr. phil. in history.

From 1973 he worked as a research assistant to Eduard März for the Austrian Creditanstalt , supervised its historical archive and played a key role in the creation and publication of the bank's history. In 1989/90 he was a Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute in San Domenico di Fiesole . In 1991/92 Weber coordinated a research project at the Oesterreichische Nationalbank's anniversary fund on the subject of economic policy in the Kreisky era . In 1992, he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the banking crisis in Austria in the interwar period and was appointed university lecturer at the University of Salzburg.

Weber has worked on several historical exhibitions. For the Austrian Historical Commission , he led a research group for the linearization of the Austrian economy in the era of National Socialism . He then wrote a study for the Oesterreichische Nationalbank on the history of the National Bank and the Reichsbank headquarters Vienna of the Deutsche Reichsbank in the period from 1938 to 1975. He has written and edited several books.

Since 1983 Weber has held various teaching positions at Austrian universities. From 1992 he concentrated on teaching at the University of Vienna , the University of Salzburg and the Vienna University of Economics and Business .

In addition to his academic activities, he was also active as a music critic, especially for the Salzburger Nachrichten and as an opera dramaturge at various European opera festivals and at European opera houses. He translated and edited opera libretti . In these areas he usually drew as Derek Weber .

Weber died on the night of May 13-14, 2020; he was most recently sick with COVID-19 .
