Fritz Wimmer (* 27. January 1879 in Rochlitz (Sachsen); † 12. February 1960 in Neuburg am Inn ) was a German painter of Impressionism .

Life

Fritz Wimmer studied in 1896 at the private art school Ludwig Schmid-Reuttes in Munich and in May 1887 moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in the class of Karl Raupp . From 1898 to 1904 he studied with Paul Hoecker , Ludwig von Herterich and Franz von Stuck . In Dachau he met Ludwig Dill and Adolf Hölzel during a summer stay . In 1906 he followed the latter to the Stuttgart Art Academy , where he was a student in Adolf Hölzel's composing class until 1910. He then returned to Munich and settled in Schwabing as a freelance artist. In addition to landscapes in the late impressionist style, the focus of his work was on portraits of well-known personalities from the Munich art and literary scene (including Franziska Countess von Reventlow ) and figurative representations.

He was a member of the Munich Secession , the German Association of Artists (his name is still listed in the membership directory until the DKB was forced to dissolve in 1936) and the Dutch artists' association "Pictura". He continued his education on trips to Belgium, Holland and northern France as well as Italy; The travel impressions were reflected in paintings and watercolors. In 1944 his studio in Schwabing was destroyed in an air raid, with many of his pictures and sketches being burned. Thereupon he moved to Neuburg am Inn .

The acquaintance with Alfred Kubin , who had existed since 1930 and lived in Zwickledt on the opposite bank of the Austrian Inn, deepened into a close friendship that lasted until Kubin's death in 1959. Since 1949 he was a member of the "Bund Freischaffender Künstler" in Passau . In 1950 he had a solo exhibition in Regensburg, then four years later in Passau he participated in the exhibition of former members of the Munich Secession and the DKB. Works are u. a. in the Gemäldegalerie Dachau, in the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus Munich and in the Oberhaus-Museum Passau.
