In Group E, Mexico and the Netherlands fought head-to-head for group victory. After Oranje disappointed in the first game against neighboring Belgium, Dennis Bergkamp's team turned up against South Korea and won 5-0. In the last group game, the Netherlands and Mexico finally drew 2-2, while the Belgians also ended their last game with a draw and thus missed the knockout stage.

In a high-class game between the Netherlands and Argentina, Oranje got the upper hand 2-1. Player of the day was Dennis Bergkamp, who prepared the 1-0 and scored the 2-1 winning goal in stoppage time.

Brazil had better nerves in the semi-final against the Netherlands and were able to prevail on penalties. During regular time, Ronaldo gave the Seleção the lead. Patrick Kluivert equalized with three minutes to go, forcing the penalty shoot-out after extra time went goalless. While in Brazil all shooters converted, Ronald de Boer and Phillip Cocu failed to Claudio Taffarel.

In the small final between Croatia and the Netherlands, the World Cup debutant from the Balkans prevailed. The scorer of the 2-1 winning goal was again Davor Šuker, who secured the sole lead in the scorers list and thus became the top scorer of the 1998 World Cup. The Netherlands showed the disappointment after the semi-final defeat. In the end, Croatia deservedly came in third.
