Fulgencio Obelmejias (born January 1, 1953 in San Jose de Rio Chico , Venezuela ) is a former Venezuelan boxer . He was world champion of professional boxers de WBA in the super middleweight division.

Career

Amateur career

Fulgencio Obelmejias started boxing as a teenager. He quickly developed into an excellent fighter who fought as an adult at a height of 1.84 meters in the middleweight class, up to 75 kg body weight. He boxed in the normal delivery (left delivery).

In the international boxing ring he made his first appearance in 1974 when he was defeated on points at the Central American & Caribbean Championships in Caracas in the middleweight division only in the final against Alejandro Montoya from Cuba . In 1975 he defeated the Cuban Carlos García on points in the final battle of the same championship in Guatemala City and thus won this title. It was a remarkable success, as victories over Cuban boxers were a rarity at the time.

In 1976 Fulgencio Obelmejias took part in the Olympic Games in Montreal for Venezuela . However, he had the misfortune to meet another Cuban, Luis Felipe Martínez , in his first fight in the round of 32 , against whom he lost on points and thus only finished 17th with all the losers of his round.

Profile career

Fulgencio Obelmejias, nicknamed Fully Obel, began his professional career on January 30, 1977 in Caracas with a technical knockout victory in the first round over his compatriot Franklin Suzarra. He defeated the same boxer in the revenge on April 3, 1977 in Caracas again by a technical knockout in the 2nd round.

This was followed by six short-round victories in Mexico and the United States over lesser known opponents. He then boxed six times in a row in Caracas in 1978 and fought his way to a title fight with six quick knockout or technical knockout victories (including defeating Johnny Heard and Ken Blackwell during this time) for the WBC FECARBOX middleweight title against Carlos Marks . This fight took place on December 17, 1978 in Culiacan , Mexico, and was won by Fulgencio Obelmejias by technical knockout 9th round.

Then he continued his winning streak. He quickly won six more fights in Caracas by knockout or technical knockout. Then on March 3, 1980, he met former WBC junior middleweight champion Elisha Obed , who he was also knocked out in defeated the 3rd round. With further victories in eight fights Fulgencio Obelmejias then fought for the right to a title fight for the world championship against the title holder Marvin Hagler . On the way to this he suggested u. a. Lamont Lovelady on May 26, 1980 in Caracas and Felton Marshall on August 19, 1980 on points. He also fought for the first time as a professional in Europe and beat it on September 10, 1980 in Sanremo Fred Johnson and on September 10, 1980 in Rome Leroy Green Jr. , each by knockout in the 3rd round.

The world championship fight against "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler , in which it was about the WBC middleweight title and the WBA world championship middleweight title, took place on January 17, 1981 in Boston . Hagler turned out to be a number too big for Obelmejias and won this fight by techn. KO in the 8th round. Before the fight against Hagler, Obelmejias had remained undefeated in 30 fights and had achieved 28 knockout and technical knockout victories.

After this defeat, he won the next eight fights in Caracas , Barquisimeto and Porlamar , all by knockout or technical knockout. He defeated the former WBA junior middleweight champion Eddie Gazo and on October 6, 1981 on November 7, 1981 the South Korean Park Chong-pal . On October 30, 1982, Fulgencio Obelmejias and Marvin Hagler fought for revenge in Sanremo , Italy . Again it was about the same title as in the preliminary fight. Hagler turned out to be the stronger one again and won this fight by technical knockout in the 5th round.

Obelmejias liked Italy so much that he stayed in that country for the next few years and only boxed in Italy and Monaco for the next few years . He won his next eight fights in a row, but had to go full rounds in the fights against Jeff Lampkin, Jerry Celestine, Arthel Lawhorne, Cesar Abel Romero and Eric Winbush. He suffered a point defeat on July 21, 1985 in Italy in the fight against Clarence Osby . He lost that fight over eight rounds on points.

On May 30, 1986 he fought again in Venezuela for the first time . He defeated it in Porlamar in the fight for the WBA Fedelatin light heavyweight championship Tomas Polo-Ruiz and was thus professional champion of the Caribbean . He lost this championship title, however, in his next fight on November 16, 1986 in Port of Spain on Trinidad and Tobago against future world champion Leslie Stewart by knockout in the 4th round. That was his first knockout defeat.

On June 18, 1987 Fulgencio Obelmejias boxed for the first time in New York and defeated there in the Felt Forum in the light heavyweight Chris Reid by knockout in the 10th round. He then moved to the super middleweight division and met in Suanbo , South Korea , on Park Chong-pal , whom he had already defeated once in 1981. It was in this fight for the WBA world title in super middleweight and Obelmejias won after 12 rounds unanimously on points. This made him world champion among professionals. A good year later, on May 28, 1989, he competed in Yeosu , South Korea, against Baek In-chul for his first title defense. Fulgencio Obelmejias lost it in the 11th round by technical knockout and thus also lost his title.

After this defeat he only played three more fights, all of which he won. He played his last fight on December 15, 1992 in Caracas, winning over Eduardo Rodriguez on points.

He then resigned at the age of almost 40. Of 57 fights as a professional boxer, he had won 52 fights.
