production

The fifth production season of Futurama marks the comeback of the series after a break of several years. It was discontinued in 2003 by the US broadcaster Fox after 72 episodes. However, reruns on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim achieved stable ratings, and the first seasons also sold well on DVD . When Comedy Central acquired the broadcasting rights to Futurama for the years 2008 to 2013 in October 2005 , the broadcaster also had the option to broadcast new Futurama episodes. Finally, it was agreed to continue the series through so-called direct-to-DVD productions based on a proposal by Futurama creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, i.e. material that is not first released on television, but directly on DVD for the home video market. These were to be made into television episodes and broadcast on Comedy Central. With four DVDs the resumption of production was possible to cover costs. Comedy Central paid for part of the cost, and the remainder was to be collected by selling the DVDs.

After the decision for four DVDs had been made, those responsible, above all Groening, Cohen and Ken Keeler , first had to decide how the plot should be divided. In addition to other formats, an all-encompassing plot and four independent films were up for discussion. Ultimately, four films were made, each with a completed plot; only the first ends with a cliffhanger that explains the beginning of the second. The conception took place in two steps, as Groening explained in an interview at the beginning of 2007:

"We're writing them as movies and then we're going to chop them up, reconfigure them, write new material and try to make them work as separate episodes."

"We'll write them as films, and then we'll split them up, remodel them, write new material, and try to make them work as separate episodes."

- Matt Groening : Interview

In another interview that same year, Cohen made it clear that there will be differences between the films and the TV versions:

“We're beginning with the four direct-to-DVD feature releases, and then down the road, each of them will appear as an epic four-episode arc on Comedy Central. There are a few things on the DVD that we won't have on the show, and a couple of things on the show that won't be on the DVD, because it'll be for TV. "

“We'll start with the four direct-to-DVD films and then, later, each of them will come out as an epic four-part on Comedy Central. There are a few things on the DVD that we won't have on the show, and there are some things on the show that we won't have on the DVD because it will be on TV. "

- David X. Cohen : Interview

Groening and Cohen were able to recruit the old staff for the production: all authors , speakers and the animation team returned. Various celebrities lent their voices to characters in the form of guest appearances :

  • Al Gore as himself in Bender's Big Score (Part 2) and (Part 4)
  • Dan Castellaneta as a robot devil in The Age of the Tentacle (Part 4)
  • Coolio as Kwanzaabot in Bender's Big Score (Part 4)
  • David Cross as Yivo in The Age of the Tentacle (Part 3) and (Part 4)

publication

As a direct-to-DVD productions were the first four films each on DVD , partly on Blu-ray releases (see Bender's Big Score , The Beast with a Billion Backs , Bender's Game and Leela and Enzyklopoden ) . They are available in a box set in DVD regions 2 and 4 under the title Futurama: The Collected Epics . A publication of the cut version for television for the video market is not known.

The television version of the films ran for the first time on March 23, 2008 on Comedy Central's program. On that day it broadcast all four episodes of the first film one after the other. He also followed this pattern for the following episodes: He showed the episodes of The Age of the Tentacle on October 19, 2008, of Bender's Game on April 26, 2009, and of Leela and the encyclopedias on April 26, 2009.

ProSieben showed the first broadcast of the German dubbed version between September 19, 2010 and January 16, 2011. The station showed an episode of the new season on Sunday afternoons shortly after 5 p.m., followed by an older one.
