The Gothenburg tram is with a track length of 161 km of one of the largest tram systems in Northern Europe . Since large parts of the city center are closed to motorized individual traffic (except for residents and suppliers), the tram is the preferred mode of transport for Gothenburg residents .

Besides Norrköping and Stockholm, Gothenburg is the only city in Sweden that has kept its tram ( Swedish : Göteborgs spårvägar ) after the switch from left-hand to right-hand traffic in 1967 ( Dagen H ). Today a total of twelve tram lines operate in the city.

history

Historic tram in Gothenburg from ASEA from the 1920s

The first tram in Gothenburg was a horse-drawn tram between Brunnsparken and Stigbergsliden. Operations began on September 24, 1879. It had a 1000 gauge mm ( meter gauge ). The following year a line to Drottningstorget followed. From the 18th August 1902 replaced the electric tram with the gauge of 1435 mm ( standard gauge ) the horses train from whose last line was set on 28 October of the same year.

In the 1960s (the "Stadsbaneplan" was laid out in 1967) there were plans to convert the tram system into a light rail system with tunnels through the center. It turned out that tunnels would have become very expensive due to the loamy soil. The project is to be resumed. Today there are five branches of the route with tracks separated from the rest of the traffic (light rail operation): Hisingen (lines 5 and 6 to Länsmansgården), Angered (4, 8 and 9), Östra Sjukhuset (lines 1 and 5), Kortedala / Bergsjön (6, 7 and 11) and Tynnered (1, 7 and 8). There are also three branches of the route with shared road use (tram operation): Mölndal (lines 2 and 4), Kålltorp / Torp (line 3) and Saltholmen (11 and 9 in summer).

The openings of the light rail traffic:

  • 1944 Vågmästareplatsen to Eketrägatan (currently loop Lundby Egna Hem) - H
  • 1957 Bellevue to Kortedala, Aprilgatan - KB
  • 1959 to Biskopsgården, Väderilsgatan - H
  • 1962 Linnéplatsen and Högsbogatan to Marklandsgatan - T (between Linnéplatsen and Frölundaborg on the route of the former Gothenburg – Särö Järnväg )
  • 1963 Marklandsgatan to Högsbotorp, Axel Dahlströms Torg - T
  • 1964 to Frölunda Torg - T
  • 1964 to Länsmansgården, Varmfrontsgatan - H
  • 1966 to Tynnered, Opaltorget
  • 1969 Old VGJ train station (near main station) to Hjällbo - A
  • 1970 to Bergsjön, Komettorget - KB
  • 1972 Hjällbo to Angered Storås (with Hammarkullen tunnel station) - A
  • 1978 Storås to Angered Centrum
  • 1982 Vidkärr, Kaggeledstorget - Östra Sjukhuset - ÖS

Most lines meet at the Brunnsparken stop, which is the central transfer point for public transport in Gothenburg. Exceptions are lines 8 and 13. The main train station (Centralstations) is also an important transfer point, as passengers come there not only from the trains, but also from the neighboring bus station (Nils Ericsonterminalen), where regional buses , coaches and airport buses to Gothenburg Airport / Landvetter and to Göteborg / Säve Airport . Korsvägen is another important stop where lines 6 and 8 meet, leading to the city center and Mölndal. Most tram lines operate on the south side of Göta älv ; only lines 5, 6, 10 and 13 cross the river and reach the island of Hisingen.

Current vehicle fleet

In 2014 the operation was carried out with 263 railcars. These were divided into:

  • 60 M28 cars (70 cars procured from ASJ , Linköping , between 1965 and 1967 )
  • 58 M29 wagons (60 wagons procured from Hägglund & Söner , Örnsköldsvik , between 1969 and 1972 ),
  • 80 type M31 cars (railcars with a low-floor center section, procured between 1984 and 1992 from ASEA / ABB , Västerås ). The vehicles were originally procured as M21 and two railcars were coupled together. Between 1998 and 2002 the cars were equipped with a low-floor middle section and then referred to as the M31 . The M31 vehicles were modernized again between June 2011 and March 2017. The work resulted in the Czech companies Ekova Electric and Cegelec Praha by
  • 65 type M32 cars (low-floor multi-articulated cars , supplied by AnsaldoBreda , Pistoia , Italy , 2004–2013 ).

M33, the planned successor type

A bidding consortium consisting of the companies Bombardier Transportation and Vossloh Kiepe was awarded the contract for the delivery of new M33 railcars . There are 30 one-way vehicles of type A and 10 bidirectional vehicles of type B. There are 33 vehicles m long. Delivery is scheduled to take place from mid-2021.

In addition, there are options for the purchase of up to 60 additional units, which must be ordered in tranches of at least 10 railcars. The options can be redeemed until 2026. In addition to types A and B, a type C can be ordered. This is a one-way vehicle with 45 m length. However, their use would require modifications to the route network.

After the initial problems with the M32 type, the network operator insisted that the first two cars should be delivered in spring 2019 and only successfully 20,000 km must have traveled before the delivery of additional vehicles is accepted.

In December 2019, the first Flexity vehicle arrived in Gothenburg (called the M33 there) from the Bombardier plant in Bautzen. It bears the vehicle number 490. The vehicle series is to be delivered by 2022. The next vehicle was expected in spring 2020.
