Gündoğan is a municipality belonging to the Bodrum district in the Turkish province of Muğla .

location

The place, whose name translates to sunrise , is located on a bay in the northwest of the Bodrum Peninsula. It can be reached by the main road that leads from Bodrum, 25 kilometers away, through the interior of the peninsula, as well as by the road that runs along the north coast.

history

The Peynirçiçeği Mağarası ( Cheese Flower Cave ), which is considered to be the oldest human settlement on the Bodrum Peninsula, is located on a hill above the village on the other side of the main road . The name of the Legian city ​​that was on the site of the present day settlement was Farilya. It is believed that this name also meant sunrise.

Attractions

Besides the ancient cave, there are ruins of a Byzantine church on an islet. This is controlled as part of boat tours. There are also some old windmills and cisterns in the village .

economy

Here, too, tourism has become an important industry. The place is particularly popular with windsurfers . As everywhere on the peninsula, numerous apartment complexes have been built on the surrounding slopes . However, one can still find olive and tangerine groves .
