In her theater education activities she worked at the Oberhausen Theater and realized various projects for the Marl Theater. She worked for the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation; worked primarily for the cultural studies institute in Essen in a theater project funded by the Ruhr 2010 with young people and realized a multi-year model youth project in cooperation with esw Hagen. For the Südbahnhof in Krefeld she designed an experimental theater work with young people that was inspired by the compositional methods of John Cage. She works not only with preschoolers, elementary, secondary and upper school students, but also with young adults and senior adults.

Just like from 2018 to 2020, when she staged a 120-strong artistic ensemble of amateur singers, instrumentalists and actors on the Dortmund opera stage. At the Dortmund Opera she was the artistic director of the Bürgeroper. She built this up and, together with the participants, created a self-developed piece entitled "Hej Stadt".

As a film actress you can see Çölgeçen in films by Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay ("Oray"), Phillip Leinemann ("The Informant"), Michael Koch ("Maria"), Sülbiye Günar-Freytag ("Abgebrannt"), S. Freytag ("Burnout." "- nominated for the Max Ophüls Prize ), Oliver Dommenget ( 247 days )." She also appears in various works by young filmmakers.

With her own pieces she has appeared on various stages and festivals. In 2002 the piece Almanya was created based on Feridun Zaimoglu's early work Koppstoff (1998). The piece was awarded a prize by the Ministry of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the “Intercultural Action Concept”. This production has performed at traditional theaters such as the Schauspielhaus Bochum , the Kassel State Theater , Theater Oberhausen and Westphalian State Theater (WLT) Castrop-Rauxel , but also in schools and universities in cities such as Mönchengladbach , Duisburg , Bochum and Leipzig was Almanya to see as well as at the “Turkish Theater Days 2002”, “Theaterzwang 2004”, “Theaterszene Europa 2005” and “Festwoche Turkey 2006”, where the play and the subsequent discussion between viewers and participants were rated as highlights of the festival.

It is the Turkish women of the second and third generation who have their say here and confront the audience unprotected with an open and honest view of Germany .

As a follow-up production funded by the ministry, " Black Virgins " was created after Feridun Zaimoglu and Günter Senkel in coproduction with the WLT Castrop Rauxel. For her acting performance in it, she was named third as the best actress in North Rhine-Westphalia in the 2007 “critics survey” by the theater magazine “theater pur”. As a binational production she brought out the piece not and works as an artist in international productions in France, Sardinia and Germany. A follow-up production "Schwarze Jungfrauen 2" followed, which was implemented in cooperation between the WLT and the Duisburg Theater.

In 2006 she realized the binational joint production "not" with the Turkish "Tiyatro Anadolu" ( Eskishehir ) as part of the Bostanbul Festival . For the 2010 Capital of Culture year she developed the art and culture project "365.5". She received a sponsored cultural trip to Istanbul, where she met with actors from the Istanbul art and culture scene and entered into an intensive dialogue with them.

For her theater work she also created her own text versions based on literary models such as “Son of Her Father” based on Tahar Ben Jelloun and her own dramatic texts and directing work for the pieces “12 minutes” (director) (festival production Bostanbul 2006) and “Wir haben Glück” (text and direction) (Melez festival production for NRW 2005).

The productions "original - gercek" (2010), "Gammel DE LUX" (2010), "OYOYOY" (2013) and "Schaf, Biene, Pferd" (2016) were realized by the theater label Free Radicals based on their texts.

Free Radicals - The Hybrid Theater of the Present As a hybrid theater of the present, her works appear under the theater label Freie RadISCHE, which she founded in 2009. The profile of the group is characterized by theater productions with a migrant and post-migrant, inter- and transcultural focus. In her collage-like combinations, Günfer Cölgecen explores and experiments in collaboration with other artists, crossing borders, de-categorizations and ambiguous images. Free radicals feel regionally rooted in the multicultural and intercultural Ruhr area. As a natural and integral part of the artist's own identity, they perceive the diversity as an authentic basis for their work. Terms such as home, identity, conflict, migration, history, gender, etc. are subject to enormous centrifugal forces, which the Free Radicals group counteracts through their work by making the diversity of these terms available and relating them anew.

The free radical production "OYOYOY" was created in 2013 with the kind support of the City of Bochum, the Sparkasse Bochum Foundation for the Promotion of Culture and Science, Werner Richard-Dr. Carl Dörken Foundation. The piece stages a text sound score, some of which was created using the automatic writing method. Site-specific texts and sounds that speak for a human life, ... noisy life, chaos, order, construction site, aesthetics, idea, possibility ... In the foreground is the performing choir, which lends the city score its polyphonic voice. Singing about symbols - texts about the search for meaning - songs about the meaningless. Onomatopoeic impressions of a multicultural city and its inhabitants.

Sascha Westphal writes in his review published in "nachtkritik" and "Kulturkenner": "The Ensemble circles Bochum in surprising choreographies and irritating onomatopoeia, in briefly appearing game scenes and visually powerful tableaux vivants, in monologues and choir passages." "Images of the city and images for the city, contradicting and poetic, frightening and beguiling, like Günfer Cölgecen's texts, which are copied from reality and lyrically condense it again and again." Chantal Stauder in WAZ speaks of an extraordinary production and Daniel Kasselmann speaks of a "furious, hybrid language mosaic" and gives the extremely exciting and highly sensual performance his unreserved audience recommendation.

From 2018 to 2020 she is artistic director of the Dortmund Citizens Opera at the Dortmund Opera.
